  1. Just grab a big block of polystyrene, and get to work with a Stanley knife. Wrap it in gladwrap and gaffer tape it on. Back in the water in time for tomorrow, easy!
  2. We're in. And even paid up! Would be awesome to get a bunch of basically standard GBE's out there. Shouldn't be too much of a mission considering how many are floating about on moorings around Northcote and Okahu.
  3. I know I'm a week late, but just thinking back to Fireballs, with 400lb static tension on the forestay, the WINDWARD shroud would go loose with the crew on the wire. because you have 100kg pulling the rig over. Digression...It was commonplace to get the crew out in under 10 knots, even if the helm was sitting to leeward, because the tension imbalance would cause the mid mast area to push to windward, opening the slot slightly. Back on topic... Looking at the pic, I think that traveller is just to take sheeting loads. It's a pretty old looking Jav, (Farr mk1?) and back then everyone us
  4. Yep, meant to email you last night but was too stuffed and sunburnt, then fell asleep without doing any of the planned things. Looking forward to riverhead on Saturday, and of course the rum race on the 23rd.
  5. Holy moly that's a good zoom on your camera! Taken maybe a mile away? I couldn't work out which boat you were in the distance, but those black sails look good!
  6. Euphoria will be there. Especially now that I know she sails I hope the handicapper knows what to do!
  7. So we finally got our biggest jib up today, while "moving house". Seems to be like 105% overlap. Full hoist or close to it. Because we are still in the development phase, we were sheeting to the main beam for twist control, while running the spare sheet aft to create a sort of bridal. Seemed to work ok, but I'm looking forward to getting the right leads sorted. Looks like they'll be about 2 feet aft of the beam, and 18 inches out from centre. Does that distance from centre sound about right? Happy with the performance today, managed to pass most of the boats that were going the same w
  8. Moved the boat! She's now on her own mooring. Not to be outdone by all the boats leaving Little Shoal Bay this weekend, we moved in!
  9. Has anyone noticed the new insurance ad on the radio? Voiced by a c.o.nz senior member? I chose the same company for euphoria, no idea how well they handle claims, nor do I wish to find out. Just pleased to know I'm not alone in answering a few more questions
  10. Booboo you don't have two standard gbe centreboards too do you? Euphoria has awesome new foils all round, but fitting them properly won't happen until the winter. And I'm not getting a lot of sailing done this summer yet!
  11. If we'd bought a cat, there'd only be two hulls to finish!
  12. Agreed! And sometimes I wish I'd gone for the "Haul her out and do the work first" approach, rather than the "Leave her on ScottiE's mooring and hope for calm days to do the work approach. Luckily the solid parts were already pretty good, so its just lots and lots and even more lots of strings and randomly developed bits and pieces. It seems the Auckland multi fleet is expanding at quite a fast pace, there appear to be boats changing hands every few days at present. Quite a few not-very-modded GBE's, maybe we could get a "Classics" division going! Anything with the original hull shape
  13. All three sail well, although the aquarius has a pinched stern so doesn't like big weather downhill. The sabre has a short deep cockpit, which can get very cramped and it feels like you're stuck at the back. Check out a Merlin 6.1, well built, roomy, and well balanced.
  14. Hi all, I'm looking for a cheap and cheerful dinghy, large enough to take two adults and a few small kids under outboard power from the shore to the boat. 8-10 foot ancient parkercraft or something similar would be fantastic. Will live outside, so nothing too desirable or flash. Anything considered.
  15. Cool! Can you check the rod along the stbd side of the pod too please? It was all but gone last weekend so I temp lashed it, but didn't manage to get up to deal with it this week. Will bring dinghy up this week and try to get out after work to sort it properly.
  16. I guess that means I was the only one to have a pleasant experience at Westhaven today? Late afternoon I went down to have a look at the other 8.5 setups. Someone just happily let me in, no questions. The new security system obviously works a charm, just ask the guard who gave me directions! First time I've ever set foot on those jetties.
  17. Hmm you're probably right. Just how does one handicap a bog standard gbe with no race history and old pinhead mainsail? How about starting ten minutes before the slowest other gbe? Twenty? I'm thinking we'll probably start alongside Plan B and Sublime? Seems pretty fair considering we're all on a big learning curve and won't have kites on this occasion. Although I wouldn't object to a small head start. Now, how do I convince them both to join in?
  18. So I now have a dilemma. First boat to start, or one of the last. Very slow wet boat, or fastish wetter boat. Think I need the Double Rainbow guy, "what does it mean? " Passing people is lots of fun, but so is watching all the fast boat charging past on the long course. Ooh what to do, what to do!
  19. Unlike Dambo I'm planning to leave the little boat behind this time, although getting pressure from family to sail that and not the GBE. Matt can I enter both boats for the handicapper and nomimate which one closer to the time?
  20. Got rescued! Twice! Well not quite, but when the weather went a bit rough late monday, I flagged down a passing launch to take the family from the mooring to the shore. Then got in the dinghy, with our gear, and set off. Within seconds the shear pin went in the outboard. Old age probably as didn't touch anything. Started to row into a decent headwind and promptly tore the rowlock or whatever its called on an inflatable, clean off. Sculled back to the boat, flagged down another launch, and got a ride. Big thanks the the crews of Tuscany, and Scenario. And to those who totally ign
  21. Yes, downwind with reefed main, jib, and kite. We kept the board locked down for safety, and, ummm... didn't really have a lot of spare hands. We raced 3-up all the time, and in that sort of breeze were too busy just keeping the boat on her feet to bother with anything except the vitals. Those were our conditions. Anything under about 25knots and the N25's etc would leave us behind going downhill, although we could match them upwind in all weather. In the big stuff tho we would finish a leg ahead, as we could beat them in every direction. One of my biggest regrets in sailing is that I
  22. I had an old Johnson 7.5 2 stroke in our N22, more than adequate in anything we encountered. The 22 has minimal windage and with the well the prop doesn't lift out. Have motored across Whangarei harbour into 40 knots with no problems. Witnesses told me that we got completely airborne the same day, under kite as we entered Parua Bay, close to the nook.
  23. A bit surprised to see dragon so far behind. Aren't tri's meant to be quicker than anything else uphill
  24. Got disqualified!!! And not from a sailing event! Well, not quite, but got penalised out of contention at the NZ karate champs. Sport karate is not full contact, but you need to be close enough that another 2cm would really hurt The last thing my wife said right before our division was up was a joking "Knock 'em dead!" but unfortunately I almost did. The new NZ No.3 is gonna have one hull of a sore face today. He came forward attacking, I blocked and counter attacked, and he came forward a little faster than I thought, and ran straight into a right hand. If it was boxing I wo
