  1. Almost certainly they were fined for going for a walk outside their local area. If they live aboard their local area is their deck. If they live on land it’s their neighbourhood. And under the SOE the Police have the powers to do this (and more). I expect we’ll hear of more cases like this.
  2. Apparently the Police are doing the rounds at Kawau, politely but firmly telling boaties no moving anchorage, no sailing, no going ashore, no paddle-boarding and even no swimming. They're also taking a log of which boats are where. Despite the lovely weather, locking down at home still like the better option to me (especially as I've needed 2x unexpected emergency dental visits this week)!
  3. The first UK Marina has just written to all berth holders to say no fees to be charged during lockdown, given it’s closed with no access to services etc.
  4. 3 masts would have been a barque. V cool 😊
  5. Not surprised. Exactly as I said a few days ago the vast majority of boaties will not be able to withstand 4 weeks without stepping off the boat. Especially when the sunny sand is just a few 100m away and beckons. And the most popular (sheltered) all-weather anchoring spots have very few go ashore options creating bottlenecks and tensions. It happened at a Barrier and now at Kawau. Entirely predictable.
  6. With you LOD you can make a decent walk for yourself just by doing a few laps of the deck!
  7. Interesting. Wonder how they’ll define ‘rule-breakers’? In the narrowest sense it’s anyone who read the notice that said “no leisure boating activities” whilst they were on land but then packed up and went afloat anyway. But assuming that ship has sailed - pardon the deliberate pun - how will define rule-breaking now? Anyone who has moved anchorage one day to the next (without a howling gale making it necessary)? Anyone who goes for a walk ashore and talks to another walker???
  8. The usual congregation hotspots are obviously closed (KBC and Bon Accord cafe) and so with so much private land relatively few beaches I’d have thought there is plenty of opportunity for locals to avoid boaties (by keeping away from the sheltered beaches)?
  9. That’s right. This risk is that IF you are exposed you’ll find out on the water - possibly a good distance from practical help.
  10. My spy at GH tells me about 20 boats returned yesterday. Maybe the novelty is wearing off. And some realities sinking in.
  11. Agree Hanses are also a good option and probably the top sailing performer amongst the Euro ‘plastic fantastics’. But I’ve rejected a couple of used ones that didn’t seem to have withstood the test of time so well. And I gather most of the big charter operators found they suffered much worse wear & tear than the Ben/Jen/Bav boats under heavy charter use so they’ve mostly stopped buying them.
  12. Yes the Bene First is another great option and in a different league to a 1220. Designed more for performance & racing than the Oceanis cruising range, the Firsts also have slightly beefed up rig & hull at high load points.
  13. In summary on the Euro options: 1. if 40ft is an upper limit then from recollection probably only Beneteau Oceanis 40 or Jeanneau 39DS stand a chance of meeting your tall requirements for headroom. 2. But if $250k (not 40ft) is your upper limit then the Beneteau Oceanis 46s, Hanse 461 and Beneteau 473s on TM are all huge volume and worth a look. Otherwise buy a ship.
  14. My experience as a 6’2” sailor of buying and owning European & Kiwi boats is that you will almost certainly not get 6’4” headroom in a 40 footer of any design. Exceptions being (1) custom builds and (2) European Deck Saloon / Kiwi Pilothouse designs. Generally speaking kiwi designs are lower headroom (except for pilothouse designs) mostly seeking performance in favour of headroom. I recall viewing a Farr 46 that I couldn’t stand upright in. The European boats are generally taller down below but you don’t find 6’4” throughout the boat until you get up to the 50ft mark (depending o
  15. The Jeanneau DS (deck saloon) range has huge headroom, stowage and overall volume. I’ve got a 42DS but even the 39DS is a spacious boat. I’m 6’2” and breeze through the boat.
  16. I think the market in several major sectors has died. Again only today, a friend with a highly desirable ‘hot’ property in one of Auckland’s most sought after inner city suburbs had precisely zero viewings at the open home. Whereas a few weeks ago similar nearby properties were selling at auction 25% over CV. It’s happening.
  17. My experience In the last few days (helping friends) buying boats is that there are some spectacular deals to be done. Even in the 6 months before Covid the used boat market was looking pretty stagnant but I think in the last few days it has literally died. The number of people out there prepared to buy a boat right now in these uncertain times is next to nothing. Any vendor who gets an offer today (however crazy) will be tempted because they might not get an offer for another 12-18 months. So forget the price tag - find something you like, try offering 50% of asking, and be prepared to own it
  18. When testing an engine by running at full speed for 5 mins and measuring the temp of the exhaust system, can someone remind me exactly where you’re supposed to point the temperature thingy? And what is the right temp range to be in?

Not a crew app it’s by imgur. I’ve been struggling to find a secure photo hosting service that allows me to take a pic on my phone and easily upload it to any forum. Imgur seems to work.

  21. I’ve stopped fishing. To get fair my track record doesn’t exactly make me a big environmental threat but I’ve decided to give it a rest and use the time to swim or read instead.
  22. It’s a global thing. The single greatest innovation that happened to the global supply chain & shipping industry was the introduction of the 40ft standard container. It made the whole process about 90% more efficient but that was decades ago. If a container falls off a ship on a storm today it can take up to 2 years to settle the loss / claim - due to paper chain of different agents and parties in the mix making it hard to confirm exactly who owned what at the time of the loss and who was responsible (exporter, importer, shopper, agent, trade finance / bank, insurer, buyer, seller of goods
  23. A friend has just bought a boat there. He’s on his way to liveaboard for a few months starting in March. I’ll ask him to keep an eye open for that kind of activity.
