  1. It seems surprising to me that DSC is not supported by NZ coastguard shore stations. I have a Std Horizon HX851 that I carry on my body when sailing my Formula 16, e.g. singlehanded on Lake Michigan, and DSC was a significant selling point for me. If I'm on my own, in the water, on Lake Michigan and I have to make a distress call, I don't know for sure that I'm going to be in a position to carry on a voice conversation.
  2. That link doesn't work, but I think this is what you meant: http://wharrambuilders.ning.com/forum/topics/tangaroa-flor-de-luna?id=2195841%3ATopic%3A12603
  3. Actually I don't think that was quite the question... if they were all being sold as $1 auctions, prices would adapt and they would be sold, and many probably would then get the maintenance they need or parted out and scrapped. The problem is that owners aren't selling at $1 reserve auctions (though that is exactly what I did with my Harmonic in March... multiple bidders right to the close, the buyer got a great deal by current market standards and I was very happy with the result).
  4. I got this via google just out of curiosity after noticing something on trademe earlier. Seems to tell a story... http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/categor ... ceanis+350
  5. C'mon, don't be spoiling a good story.

  7. The person who wrote that article could have saved an enormous amount of effort and ink and just written "I don't have a clue what's going on and I can't be bothered finding out".
  8. Enough for now.... Unfortunately I don't know what you consider to be enough, which was kind of the point of my question. I also don't know what YNZ think is enough, nor ACC... which I think underscores why it's difficult to really have a productive debate about this. As for the rest of your post, whether or not anyone agrees with your specific suggestions, at least they represent someone actually attempting to think through the objectives, constraints and options, which I think is fantastic. Unfortunately none of the consultation processes that I've seen have sought this kind of input,
  9. Noteworthy sentences... "Board member Joseph Bergin, 20, made a plea for people to stop telephoning him on the issue, saying he doesn't take well to being told off." "Whether the community like the outcome or not they will appreciate us moving forward, " member Dianne Hale added.
  10. balgarion, how many mast-up boats do you believe the NOWSC plan will accommodate?
  11. Did my first offshore race(s) (long weekend - Thursday-Monday)... Naples-Key West on a Catana 43 - 1st in Multihull Division (out of 2). Then Key West-Naples, 1st in Spinnaker Division (out of 6). Got hit by a thunderstorm off Marco Island Sunday night, gusts to 42 knots apparent.
  12. Also interesting that they realize they won't actually have space for all the facilities their high performance sailors will need, and so will "instead use those amenities at the nearby Millennium Institute" ('nearby' in the sense of '9km away').
  13. Latest from the Herald - Also... It would be nice if YNZ had made their analysis of the alternative sites public so we could properly understand their criteria and conclusions. It might have been a more effective way to get more of the sailing community (not to mention the rest of the community) on board.
  14. Summary: http://www.yachtingnz.org.nz/about-us/n ... rts-centre Concept drawings: http://www.yachting.org.nz/sites/yachti ... sign_0.pdf Council's full draft Takapuna reserve management plan: http://www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/Site ... ntplan.pdf I also made a submission supporting the general concept of a national high performance center, but opposing the proposed location and design, for reasons similar to those mentioned by otto etc.
  15. I'm not opposed to the general concept of a national high performance center, but this specific proposal doesn't seem very well thought through to me... http://www.yachting.org.nz/sites/yachti ... sign_0.pdf They have just a 500 sq m wedge-shaped hardstand for mast-up storage and 1500 sq m of indoor mast-down storage. This just looks kind of impractical to me for easily launching a reasonable number of boats, especially in a training scenario where people are sailing at different times and needing to get boats out past one another. Compare that with the beach space involved in a small mult
