  1. As long as the reason you are resorting to celestial isn't because your computer has died.
  2. I was reading a blog by a home builder yesterday, he uses plastic nails to hold stuff together while the glue dries. Says it holds plenty tight enough then he leaves them in, planes and chisels don't notice them and it al gets glassed over later anyway. Sounded interesting. Apparently you just hammer them in like ordinary nails.
  3. Then it's the same as mine. In perfect conditions I could get to 1/4 mile accuracy (in bad conditions I was totally lost). I think mine was about $1,000 40 years ago.
  4. That is a very good brand, can't tell from the photo what model it is though (plastic or metal?) Looks like it has a card giving errors which is good, make sure there is a tool for adjusting the mirrors. Be nice if the mirrors were in good nick. Point it at the horizon with the arm at 0 degrees 0 minutes and see if the horizon is a straight line, then point it at a star (or a pin point far away) and rock the sextant through an arc and see if the two images split.

  8. Anyone know anything? http://raidnz.org/
  9. Cheaper the better. I want to leave it in the mangroves and if it is bad enough no one will steal it.
  10. I always thought the Aussies went a bit silly over things like this after that nasty SH.
  11. Know what you mean Jon, I was held up at gunpoint in San Diego - no registration numbers on my dinghy (couldn't convince them I didn't need them). But I did sail to Mexico without paying, wonder if I'll get arrested if I go back.
  12. Our el cheapo cockpit/anchor light that backs up the real one at the masthead is solar powered, no batteries, looks good and provided enough light for the girls to play their guitars in the evening sing songs. Perfect. I have been T boned by a dinghy in the middle of a bright sunny day so there's no 100% guarantee.
  13. We've started doing two anchor lights, a good one at the masthead and a cockpit level one.
  14. I wondered about the air thing as well, don't diesels suck a bit of air and need ventilation? Any of the gurus out there?
  15. I wondered about that, Coreflute is $9 per sheet! Wonder what sticks to it?
  16. We spent a lot of time listening to RNZ
  17. Is thast an abbreviation for Bad Kitty? And where does Krisis live? Thanks.
  18. or don't tell anybody anything till after you have arrived
  19. Oops, maybe I didn't pose that correctly. I want to get rid of the fabric, build a hard bimini (ply, foam and glass, other????) to which I will attach the flexible solar panels . What has me scratching my head is what to build the thing out of, can I use the existing stainless frame, can I do it in situ??? My first thought was to stretch the crap out of the existing fabric and glass over it, but maybe I can do better with some kind of sheet material and start from scratch.
