Lifepo4 don't flame during puncture just smoke and it's quite a low thermal reaction too. There's too many different chemistries to just look at a "Lithium Fire"
  2. God had one of those in Whangamumu, Big motor boat Espada come in with 12ish people on board, did some diving then ran the dive compressor from 5pm to 11:30pm - It got bad enough I dug out the MMSI and used RSM to find out who owned it and found their home phone number in White pages, If it had gone on past midnight i was going to call and give them an earful.
  3. Hehe, "Good" welder Depending on the foot traffic something non-setting/high stretch like buytl tape might help, jam it in the cracks and it should have enough flex to last a little while. Real solution is to re-rivet the section to regain the metal-metal seal
  4. Didn't want to derail this too far but this is the first time on the bruce @ 30kn so i can't say if it's changed or not. I know it's an older design and many consider it not suitable these days, i'd sleep easier in a blow with something a bit more modern and as you say on the Lloyds register
  5. Looks good, I'm going to have to dig into anchors again (pun intended), Our bruce which i am told was an original started to pull in the 30kn's we had in Tutukaka harbour. Going to need something a little bit better suited for higher winds :/ Of course you go looking and everything is blasting you "Rocna"
  6. we had 32kn gusts inside tutukaka bay. 60+ on the anycast Sorry about your shed km
  7. *cough* we ignore it DOC too, There's never any signs up where we land or the ones that are are damaged to hell. Dog's stay on a lead and we clean up after them. Up in the BoI at the moment we walk them around town again on a lead despite there being some sort of ban around here. I think alot of it depends on the dog's and owner's, Our 2 little dachshunds on leads with nice people on the other end wouldn't cause a stir but others might
  8. We had our spare anchor out with it's 100m of rode ready to go on deck, We ended up just monitoring/putting fenders out and thankfully the crew turned up about 30min later. By this time it looked like the anchor had reset. I think if it was clear she was completely free or dragging alot we would have moved our boat first and then gone over hooked our 2nd anchor up to the bridle but doing anything to someone else's boat is not something I'd consider lightly, Saying that I'd hate for our boat to break free and someone to just watch.
  9. Ok so just got into a bit of a situation that stumped me. We've been anchored up a few bays around from Russell for the past few days riding out the blow, Yesterday another cat came and anchored up nearby but far enough we were comfortable, Dumped a CQR and a pile of chain on top of it then pull tested it. Long story short today when the wind swung from the NNW to SSW/SW in the space of 5 minutes it looks like their anchor became unset for a short while and now they were around a boat length away from our stern on the swing. We weren't quite sure what to do, They weren't on the boat, I
  10. Not anymore tried to buy it from Raymarine a while back and it was end of life with no replacement
  11. The fact that the AU Border "The SS are our role model" Force have let him go for a day trip rather than put him in a van to Manus tells me that things aren't so black and white
  12. Got daughter that exact same unicorn for Christmas, Jesus never knew it was that big based on it's box size!
  13. Seems like the sailing gods aren't smiling, Dragged anchor today in Whangamumu with 34 other boats in here, trying to reset when your steering is loosy goosy (we're here fixing it) in 20kn is not fun!
  14. If he can light diesel with matches then he can make water burn
  15. Thanks all sounds fairly run of the mill, Going to start taking a look for a BoI window from Whangarei
  16. Hi All, Been trying to get a good understanding of weather windows for coastal day sails around Northland, All of my Met experiences is from commercial aviation so I'm rather light on seas and swell's Reading around and there's almost nothing on coastal windowing, All seems to be rules of thumb for ocean crossings. Anyone got some tips/rules of thumb for NZ coastal or any general advice really?

    Batteries.

I dont think VSR's have diodes in them, I've measured no voltage drop across my bluesea one. Pretty sure it's just a sense line and a relay

    Diesel heaters.

2nd for Webasto, We have a little 2.2kw airtronic and it's just be so solid, Even after sitting unused over summer the first winter firing was perfect. Sip's fuel (We used a total of 6L over winter). Power consumption is good and you can even it just use it's fan in summer to shift some air. Heatspace.co is where I got it from and the guy running it is really nice and answers all your questions (He talked me OUT of a 6kw Hydronic kit)
  19. I think every car manufacturer would say that there is an increased risk of the unexpected when after a crash the repair was done improperly or not at all.
  20. In sailing the diesel-electric hybrid is going to be the closest thing to pure electric for a while. Being able to run a diesel in a consistent rpm at peak efficiency and being able to spin multiple props, You can now have a single 40hp engine at 170kg dry do the work of what sits today as 2 x 110kg engines and have them run both hull props and bow thruster and save fuel ( 8lph @ max vs 11lph @max). A small battery pack would also give you an overspeed option to double output for 5-10minutes in the really "oh sh*t moments"
  21. And thats why i ask questions Yes it the edge where our mooring lines rub over, I thought/hoped something advanced like Delrin would hold up over the hmwpe. The pain about SST is this shape is odd and uneven, I'll have to build up a flat platform for the SST to go on
  22. Hi All, Up until now we've had a couple of stainless plates folded over the edge of the bow where our mooring lines run over the edge. They are looking quite sad at the moment and the PO's glue is coming off etc. I was looking replacing them with some low friction plastic blocks mounted on the same area, I was wondering if anyone had used something like this before and knew of the best plastic to use? Was looking at Derlin or Acetal U given their qualities in bearing applications but not 100%
  23. Same never seen one even on the solo guys, Likewise i dont have one on most of the time when i shot down from the basin to kissing point to check on a friends boat. Nor do i have one on when going from basin piles to marina office dock
  24. Whilst the items in question may not be required they do help build the case that he was helping himself counter any lack of experience. Under the section of law IT posted: "(a) the operation or use of any ship or maritime product or class of ship or maritime product, as the case may be, endangers or is likely to endanger any person or property, or is hazardous to the health or safety of any person; or" It gives a broad scope to consider the person experience, Wheres you Chris might get away with not having safety items on board because of your experience thus showing a low risk o
