  1. Pinched ends with tubby tummy makes for very rolly downhill. Bit like my dad bod. Rigs tended to be tallish with short booms and massive headsails so the death roll was like some sort of evil kinetic energy unleashed. There is a memorable passage in a local book vividly describing Chris Bouzaid and Co throttling the life out of Waianiwa running downhill in a Sydney to Hobart.
  2. Yup , sure looks like a tidy unit and it has cockpit lockers which are a pretty rare event on a lot of yachts. It's not a fatty as is from a different era than this one that I spied at Whangaparaoa recently. https://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/yachts/keeler/auction-1149232068.htm?rsqid=0123970a28904e19bbbd0e732016bc66
  3. BP, here is a Wallas listed on trademe. Wallas are great heaters and this could well be a good buy. https://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=1534107769
  4. Talking of Izzy Bay avoid anchoring on the starboard side (Motutapu)directly opposite the first bach when entering. Had to assist and unhook a fouled 60ft launch out of my Zodiac a while ago. Somebody has abandoned a rather long length of large chain and unknown anchor.
  5. Every anchorage out this season without fail I watch with interest the steaming forward over the lowering anchor technique quickly followed by the speedy reverse stop. Is this popular manoeuvre in the auto anchor hand book.
  6. BP, maybe going back in the water tomorrow at MEC Marines cost is not a wise choice. This is a warranty matter now and it is patently evident that the standard of the preparation and application is not to a professional and warrantable standard. Time to get some legal advice. Worst case scenario is a couple of days extra on the hard.
  7. BP, the whole mess needs to be removed and redone professionally. Mecmarine quoted on a professional CC application with a warranty of some sort surely and you have certainly not received that. You have paid 7.5k of 15k for a sh*t job and another 6k to the yard that Mecmarine should have paid, correct? Your tradie dad would never have behaved like Mecmarine so don’t lose any sleep over withholding the balance due until this is sorted to your satisfaction.
  8. Put some clean fresh diesel in a household spray bottle and remove air filter then crank engine whilst spraying into air intake manifold. Far better for the engine than ether WD40 etc etc. If no luck it will pay to check the engine compression with the correct tester. Standard compression testers will not do the job.
  9. Could be a good buy for someone repowering. https://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=1520341784
  10. You can cure ugly but you sure cannot cure dumb. Took the fordeck hand for a drive to Piha yesterday to indulge in a coffee at the Sandra Coney Memorial Cafe which by the way was excellent , busy though. Encountered a recent arrival variety of human on our side of a blind bend travelling quicker than a Piedy. Was tempted to drive straight into them and test out the 600 airbags and my insurance policy but chose to instead rely on my lightning fast helm reactions and passed around on the wrong side of the road. Actually the second time in a year that I have encountered this situation. Seems
  11. Have you got a inline fuel pump say like this.. With the ignition on this will pump away merrily so that you can bleed the pump through to injectors without draining your battery. The injector return line will not really burst into life until engine is humming away. Glow plugs are a easy test. If sure that injectors are receiving fuel then the only thing you are missing is compression. Ether is not good for valves etc so avoid if possible.
  12. Depends entirely on what sort of style and finish you are looking for and what level of skills you have to construct. Painted, sprayed, varnished or a mixture. Foam, ply, solid timber, veneer or laminate.
  13. Harbourmaster here in Auckland needs to start regularly enforcing the speed and separation laws in the inner harbour. The clueless cretins that speed up and down the harbour are eventually going to cost someone their life. Had one muppet just off Westhaven approaching close and a full tit so just aimed straight at him and that got his attention pretty quick smart.
  14. "Every boat that has people overnighting should have a holding tank by now." Should read, every boat that has people must have one. Freedom campers that sh*t all over this country have a seaborne version as well. Not quite sure about how enforce it but there must be a way.
  15. Whilst on the topic, sad and tragic as it is. The deadliest maritime disaster. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MV_Wilhelm_Gustloff
  16. Ahh, a bit of Kurt Vonnegut is not a bad thing to be reading stretched out in the cockpit or tucked up in your bunk. Did a Graham Green revisit a while ago. Damned good.
  17. Hi Kevin thanks for that, I have read Anne Salmond's Trial Of the Cannibal Dog. So will have a look at Joan Druett. Just finished John Sugden's Lord Nelson biographies.

'I'll try to load a pic showing the rear of my thing and you'll see what I mean." Woah cowboy, remember this is a family site.
  20. 2 degrees which I believe piggy back off the Vodaphone network is fake phone even in the Gulf. Had to go cold turkey and stop buying stuff on Trademe whilst tucked up in my bunk. Been clean for six months now and taking it day by day. Gone back to old school looking at the sky checking barometric pressure with my tongue and wind strength and direction with my middle finger. Boat speed and depth died and the thing that I missed the most was lack of sea temperature info. No longer need to plaster my little princess with a galaxy of solar panels and infernally humming and whistling power gen
  21. Yup, just had multiple replies to my Facebook offer. 2 Westhaven parking permits have produced these pearlers. Swedish female gay couple circa 25 offered free unmentionables on a daily basis coupled with boat polishing and varnish package. Grumpy 75 from Pt Chevalier offered to go gay but varnishing was not included. Pam the Butcher was keen at free meat of choice but offered no unmentionables. Parnell George had by far the winning bid to date, his daughter was available to varnish, polish and was a fully qualified marine engineer and electronics specialist that made her own sails.
  22. Don’t know what all you other sea creatures are paying to park your pride and joy at Westhaven but I am paying 7 grand a year. What do I get for the cost of a mild P or cigarette habit, well my little princess is just 7 minutes walk from my multi million dollar Ponsonby mansion and tucked up all safe and watched over by the fantastic dock crew that Westhaven is fortunate to have. Yup ,I am not weeping into my Stones Green Ginger wine yet but the cost of berthage has had a firm hand in driving the value of craft in general downwards considerably. It’s a time in memorium angst relationship t
  23. Now that is a cunning plan, talk about pin a donkey on the tail. Could be Irish economics but I will put both of my parking permits on Facebook and voila free marina = happy days. Buy a bike and lose some weight, live and sail longer. Hark what do I hear, ahh yes Westhaven Marina management issue vehicle registration specific parking permits.
