  1. both shock proof and squid are both great boats. shock proof has alot of new gear on her and a really good ross t keel. over the last few years she has undergone a pretty good tidy up by Fred the current owner. Dunno what the sails are like though and she needs a prod code zero etc. I can't remember if she has mast head gear. Fred wanted 50k for her when I looked at her last summer. Squid has the standard keel but has had some serious money spent on deck gear etc. she also has some really good sails, prod, mast head gear . I'm not sure what anatoli would want in terms of money but fo
  2. Great idea shane. First build or buy a sea kayak. I've built several out of Plywood using the stitch and tape method. There are designs on the net and you can build a really good sea kayak for around $ 500 which will be 1/3 the price of a plastic one, lighter and stiffer or you can buy a 2k glass sea kayak second hand. Barracuda kayaks built in Silverdale are particularly nice as are sea bears by perfection Then do LOTS of paddling on the east coast and then the west coast in all weather conditions. Learn to self rescue, roll, land in heavy surf and get scared a few times. Then read
  3. Pretty big effort by Smithy and Phil over the weekend saw The Marshall become a full yacht again. Few more jobs to do and a couple of sail modifications and we hit the start line on Friday for Round White island. Thanks to Smithy for the massive effort last week. White island race report coming next.
  4. te rauparaha is sitting on a mooring in russell waiting for her big birthday.

  9. I spent 3 hours watching them leave the doc last night on facebook . Awesome live link.
  10. I agree that the foliers look awesome but seriously fragile. I'm rooting for Alex Thompson on Hugo Boss, serious crap happens too him and he just keeps on trying totally weird stuff. His foils are totally different to the others. Also awesome work by Conrad Coleman he gets some serious cred if and when he makes the finish. Really good dock walk video on sailing anarchy which is actually well worth the 56 minutes it goes on for.
  11. I also totally disagree 100%. Look at the 8.5 cats and tri's for a good example
  12. hey matt Big balls to get up the rig and sort the kite!! Well done video of Provincial Cowboys coastal
  13. Careful smithy, we might be slower than before !!!
  14. when is your square top coming booboo?
  15. ooooorarrrr . Lucky they didn't sink. I thought they were running a 1 boat length exclusion zone around each other for exactly this reason. Wonder if it was the owner or the skipper on the helm.
  16. yup the Ross Substance is a balsa core hopwood hull and decks. With the bulb she makes a really nice cruiser. She doesn't have a factory interior but what she has is just as good. the current owner has done alot of tidying to her. She would be very easy to return to class, just remove the bulb and reinstate the internal ballast. These boats have good resale value when in class trim and with a racing history. Several have sold in the 20 -30k mark in the last few years and the class is having a resurgence in wellington and chch. Check out the Ross 780 facebook page https://www.f
  17. Noelex 25's are good boats but generally go for 25k plus. Any Trojan you look at will be 30 years plus old and they don't sail particularly well. Well sorted looked after Ross 780's are worth 20 - 30k. They are very well built and are an absolute joy to sail. Substance has had a bulb added which has actually made her stiffer but possibly hurt her performance down wind and on a reach which means she is slower than class boats. I wuld suggest taking the bulb off and returning her to class. She is a bargain though and has had lots of money spent on her. I'd seriously waive 15 or 16k
  18. This boat is an absolute bargain. Had heaps of work done to her and all new winches etc. Ross 780's are great boats, loads nice to sail than trojans. http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/yachts/trailersailer/auction-1158244509.htm
  19. Was that before or after masthead gear, T keels, prods, carbon rigs etc etc etc
  20. Time will tell...........LOTS of racing to do on her against some other Cowboy and spy boats On the ssanz 100 with the old keel performance was pretty similar reaching and downwind. Upwind in moderate conditions PC was quicker upwind in heavy conditions they sailed much much better than us. Cedar core vs glass.

    sunday orca

haha that reminds me of this joke. Show Him Your Badge! A police officer in Penticton stops at a local ranch. He talks with an old rancher, and tells him." I need to inspect your ranch for illegally grown drugs". The rancher says, " OKay, but do not go in that field over there," as he is pointing out the location. The police officer verbally explodes saying, " Mister, I have the authority of the federal government with me". Reaching into his rear pants pocket, and proudly displays it to the rancher. " See the badge old man? this badge means I am allowed to go on any land ... have I made m

    sunday orca

I thought this guy was pretty keen to jump in with the orca http://www.stuff.co.nz/travel/destinations/nz/83945845/drone-captures-army-bay-orca-encounter I've sailed a laser around 2 metres from a couple of orca's in Manly on Whangapoaroa and didn't feel very keen to get in the water with them. They still have teeth and are alot bigger than me!! Pretty sure I'd come out worse out of a misunderstanding.
  23. mmm carbon hinge on the instrument panel too. wow smithy thats taking it to the nth degree. Now we have to see if its the carbon panel or the 400kg on the bulb making a performance difference.
