  1. Did it on our callenge 29. Used a 180mm plastic drainage tube lashed to the boom. Quick and easy to stow the pole. Looking at doing it on Elliott 10.5. Which has a long carbon pole.
  2. Can't say I'm keen on the sinking part. Hasn't happened to me yet. Am I doing something wrong? is sailing really in decline? I know club membership is. But are there less sailors? Is this as a percentage of population or in absolute terms? Does petrol prices have something to do with it? Perhaps it just that sailing had its heyday in the 70's-90's and there are too many other things to do for leisure? One aspect is certain, boats like houses are much bigger than they used to be. Who'd contemplate building a quarter tonner these days? Or 28 footer? I'm reading a book from the 70's
  3. That's what I thought. IT my point was that it's the volume of water that is behind it which is more significant than the height, which will change as it hits the shallows and the again as it lands. As a lay person I have no idea if the 30cm is the height mid ocean, at the beach or as it washes through my house. So I don't know how to react. Last time there was a tsunami warning, I think from one of the Chilean eargquakes, a host of people around the east coast went down to the beach to watch because they didn't comprehend that 1m or so of tsunami is a mighty dangerous beast.
  4. I always wonder about this too. a lay person (like me and most of us) wouldn't know the difference between swell of 1.2m and a tsunami of 1.2m. I think the difference is that it's the volume of water behind and the speed it is traveling that counts not the height. Similar to the Bristol tidal bore. I barely raised a eyebrow at a 30cm wave. But if they said something like "a wave which can penetrate 2km inland at 30kmh" that's going to get my interest.
  5. Myth busters proved that if you run in the rain you get more wet than if you walk. Ergo, absent of AIS and English Channel situations if you go slow you will hit less things. Pure science right there.

Nothing wrong with my singing! Well, nothing that a gag or a bullet couldn't fix.

    sunday orca

I got swatted by this Humpback in Tonga last week. I don't know how to post video here, but it can be seen on my blog, if you're interested: http://uselessblogger.com/travellogues/a-tale-of-two-tongas/

    Olympic results

The olympics is generally a young person event. There is nothing stopping an old codger qualifying in any class (or sport for that matter) but they just don't want to put in the grind or lose the physical edge or both.
  9. That's not a muddy creek! It's a beautiful part of the country. I was brought up there.
  10. Just about every boat/flotsam hiding up the muddy creeks which proliferate around the coast.
  11. He was on a sickness benefit at the time. My comment was made in response to the point that was made that "they" wouldn't prosecute a superanuitant. And it was complicated for him, (I.e is money from your moms will really income?). The significance is that he is a superanuitant now and they are deducting it from his super. In answer to your question: there is no means testing of superannuation so you can earn $1m and still get it (plenty do). If you're old enough - you're eligible subject to the residency issues discussed on this thread.
  12. Having a clean out and have this. Brand new standard three blade. Not sure if it will fit the smaller motors but may do. 8 splines about 10mm shaft. For free as I don;t like filling up landfill with useful stuff. PM me.
  13. Perhaps next time we won't make the girls do all the hard work. Porkchop at Mount Maunganui Winter Series. https://youtu.be/N85ONu50Nqw

    Liability

Need to be wary that if you do something that lets someone out of a liability for damage then your insurance may be voided. Which is why you should never admit fault at a traffic accident.
  15. Certainly should and they don't have winches on board.
  16. Well they think they did. Translation of the post is: "Victory of Mariska 1908 in the Giraglia Rolex Cup 2016-great race - in IRC 0. HUGE!" Mariska 1908 is the gaff rigged schooner (?) in the middle of the start line. Built in 1908 on a similar design as Thomas Lipton's Shamrock. Looks like they claimed the divisional win, I think they are in the IRC 0 (against some classy boats) but the results say they got a 2nd, 17th and DNF to end up 43rd. According to they own website they won everything. They certainly are crowing about it and the 2nd place against some classy boats is a s
  17. Where's the link and I'll let you know.
  18. In the last two series ETNZ has either been killed on the start line or coughed up a first or second place to finish at the back of the fleet in every race (except the one in New York where they started 5 minutes after the fleet which then sailed into massive hole and ETNZ, being so far behind, held the new breeze and sailed around them to win). This tells me that their tactics are poor and they are not sailing fast. Unlike Artemis and Japan right now. I still think that these new boats are a one trick pony- the boat that wins the start gets clear air and nearly always stretches out to w
  19. I moved my boat from the Land of Auck To Tauranga a while ago And they found some on her. Because I hauled it straight away the divers cleaned my hull the next two times they were doing inspections. Nice guys.
  20. So, does the 4ohm with impedance of 3.24 and wattage of 3.672 mean we go faster or slower? I'm still a bit lost. And does it create white noise when the boat next door has Cuban jazz?
  21. Oh no you don't. Some nice quiet Neil diamond is all the boat needs. You should look up the thread about noisy stereos in quiet anchorages. ????
  22. Thanks ScottiE I'll have to drop in and see them. They weren't that forthcoming on the phone.
  23. Thanks but they only supply the core material. Is there a finished material that is lightweight and impact resistant suitable for floorboards? I'm trying avoid having to do the laminating. I can always do ply but was thinking that if there is a lighter material I'd look at it.
  24. Does anyone know where I can source some lightweight floorboard material? I was told Nomex honeycomb would be light and strong but Mr Google is hiding the suppliers from me.
  25. Don't you believe it. They're prosecuting a supernnuatant friend of mine for not declaring he was receiving money from his mums estate, about $10k a year. Because He doesn't have the money to fight it They'll be cutting his super until it is paid back.
