  1. Often the lcd is "optically bonded" (think very clear injected epoxy resin) to prevent condensation and help with waterproofing.
  2. In Australia they can get NZ citizens and Australian citizens to lodge a bond for the gst+customs which is refunded if you leave within the time period. This can be applied to NZ Citizens bringing a boat to Australia as well because NZ citizens have (second-class) permanent residency in Australia. If you have a clear and documented departure date and visiting plan, then they might not bother with the bond.
  3. Assume you're doing this to avoid Cat 1? As a owner and citizen you can register it in Australia without any complications of off shore directors, foreign shareholders, local directors, annual filing/company returns, tax implications and of course selling the boat, all complications you'll hit in the UK... Just make sure when you depart NZ that you depart on your AU passport. There could be complications if departing on a boat that you personally own and is registered in a country you're not a citizen of. Taking the UK route you'll possibly discover that the compliance costs ar
  4. Pleased to hear There was a 20knot NW today that was no where in any model. We were anchored out the top of Waiheke at Owhiti Bay it came through about midday, first as a swell which was hitting us beam on with the SW wind and then the wind followed about 30mins later. We moved. It was back to a SW by the time we got round the NE of Waiheke... You obviously didn't hit that? Must of been isolated to the middle of the gulf.
  5. Sea is the chop average across 1/3rd of the biggest waves. iirc - maybe it is 2/3rds... But it is about the big waves as these are the important ones
  6. Yes. Chart depths on NZ charts are LAT (lowest astronomical tide) in meters. Thus they are the lowest depth that will ever be seen under normal gravitational conditions. Technically they could be lower due to weather effects such as an extreme long duration high weather system, in practice you don't need to worry about those centimetres because you'd be using your depth sounder when you're that close. You'll never see a predicted low tidal height of < 0.
  7. We have one of these. Got it for a great price on TradeMe with the transit bag. It is not marine friendly, the power circuit control boards are visible through the vents which will easily attract salt water in the wrong conditions so I cannot recommend it for marine use. We used an earlier model 4wding around Australia years ago so product experience called be back. If they can handle outback corrugations of the Simpson it can handle a bash to windward. They are so energy efficient - I considered pulling out the compressor and using it for a built-in, but after lots of reading
  8. Dolphin science seems to be a bit like climate science... it's convincing enough for some but not for everyone.
  9. YNZ sent in a submission against the proposal and consulted directly with DOC. Like all the other submissions against the proposal (including my own) the YNZ submission lacked scientific research and was not evidence based. But I'd expect that for an organisation that doesn't employ or have marine scientists on hand. YNZ also reached out to all their member clubs for feedback as well. As a member of three Auckland clubs, I heard nothing from any of them about the sanctuary proposal. I don't blame the clubs either, they are volunteer driven and have more than enough to deal with. D
  10. This generally means that the internal piping inside the holdover plate, which holds the refrigerant, has developed a leak. This results in the refrigerant escaping into the eutectic solution compartment of the holding tank and causes the plate to deform. You could pressure test the tank yourself or get a specialist to do it for you. If you find that the tank has a leak, then, if you can get it out without destroying a significant part of the galley, it will almost certainly be repairable. In our case the holding plate is part of the structure of the fridge and doesn't come ou
  11. Hey Fish, you seem to have missed parts of the thread. I guess it's a lot to take in. There was an incorrect understanding on my part that Psyche was inferring that he'd ignore the sanctuary laws and indirectly encouraged others to do the same. Particularly so if he had somewhere to get to in a hurry, or if he was in a hotley contested yacht race. There was an incorrect understanding on Psyche's part that the rules were recommendations for the rest of the coast and covered more than just the BOI. Psyche subsequently stated that we'd both gotten the wrong end of the stick and
  12. Is that your opinion or is that factual and based on actual research? If factual can you please post the supporting research? Can you provide the supporting evidence behind both these assertions? Sounds like a conspiracy at the highest levels of marine science. You seem to be very knowledgeable on the entire process, the people involved making the decisions and have inside knowledge that the mms will be of no consequence to the environment. Can you share more information with the crew community? You might have missed some key content. The MMS was by no means th
  13. I am not sure that's entirely correct. My understanding is it has been bought about because the number of marine mammals in the BOI has reduced dramatically and 'they' have determined that one of the reasons for this is people and boats. The first page of the document I linked above has more details snippet below. The original consultation pack had a significant amount of research and information in it. Thanks for clarifying sorry I jumped to conclusions...
  14. Don't have any problem with anyone calling any law stupid. Please go ahead, shout it from the rooftops, get out there with your protest signs. Of course the most effective time to do that was during the 6 month public consultation period. Unfortunately the majority of respondents supported the restrictions. Did you put in a response? I did, told them I thought the real issue was the fact the Bay was being fished out and maybe they should consider making it a marine reserve and that would bring back the dolphins. Unfortunately I am not an expert in anything marine biology so I suspec
  15. I am struggling to determine if electric eutectic refrigeration makes sense still with Lithium battery sources. It used to be that you'd spend a long time charging your LA battery with the engine and that excess alternator power could be used to run the eutectic plate compressor. Or the excess solar that couldn't be stuffed into a LA battery could be used for the same. With the right setup we can fully charge a lfp battery in 30 minutes from the engine and there is now no such thing as excess solar (on a monohull at least) your lfp can easily gobble up all the solar. This isn't ev
  16. You don't have to stop within 300m you just have to stop. Take as long as you need to stop safely, part way through your stopping process the mammals might of left anyway. DoC's position is that every skipper should know how to stop their boat safely. If it helps, I know from experience, that an abrupt course change, (tacking or gybing), generally causes dolphins to instantaneously vanish....
  17. Within the BOI... Full guidance document provided as a result of the legislation is here: BOI MMS User Guidance - DOC-6818995.pdf
  18. For someone who is a site Mod and until very recently was tagged as the Site Owner, (so I can only assume you still are the site owner), your position on this legal requirement is quite deplorable. Wether you accept it or not you're in a position of leadership in what is arguably the best sailing/yacht racing forum in NZ. Your comments reflect badly on the entire community. A community that's increasingly being tagged with the #privileged tag
  19. During the 2019 Hobart we turned into Storm Bay in 40knot winds and a pod of dolphins joined us. There would of been easily 20 dolphins around us. After 10 minutes all but two were gone... These two juvenile dolphins stayed on our bow for the next 2 hours riding our bow wave. We didn't even know the dolphins were there until we were scratching our head trying to figure out why the helicopter was going around and around and around and around and around taking photos of us.... Usually the photographer takes two snaps and pisses off. And given we'd broken two stanchions and had no por
  20. According to some research papers I found on the topic of dolphins and yachts specifically... Some become addicted to the bow surfing These dolphins then become separated/lost from their pod because they go surfing great distances alone They then struggle to obtain food and protection because they are alone and lost in the ocean Worst case these dolphins don't survive alone, best case they find a pod that accepts them That was from dolphin marine scientists published in an overseas paper. It was referenced in the Information pack that DoC published as part of
  21. Cancelled. That was one of, but definitely not the only, reason given for the cancellation. There was a smorgasbord of reasons...
  22. I don't pay much attention to the big boats... have a couple of friends doing the inaugural two-handed. Day 1 Southerly 25-35 Day 2 holes with the occasional southerly and an obnoxious sea state Day 3 SE with fewer but still holes Tats cup could be going to a "small boat" this year... Pleased to be sitting this year out now that the forecast is firming up, was getting some fomo a few weeks ago.
  23. I would limit it to 80a with the existing regulator. (actually I would limit it to ~75A). Then: You won't chew the belt. You're unlikely to boil your battery's (but check the specs) You are prolonging the life of the alt You have a future proofed solution for the day that LAs need replacing and you hum & arr your LiFePO4 options
  24. My understanding is that a single v-belt tops out at 100a in a 12v system. And I believe belts should be kept at 75% of the max rating. I have to admit that I can't find anything to back this up so not sure how valid that snippet of knowledge is anymore. With the external regulator you'll be able to limit this if belt dust becomes a problem... You might want to check the current limit on your batteries and set your regulator accordingly if necessary. It's perfectly possible to 'boil' them if the conditions are right and all the swiss cheese holes align.
  25. Do you currently have an external regulator? (That seems like a lot of battery to be charging without one...) The size will only matter if you need to use it and your pulley's are too small. 250A of battery could get close to 120a of draw at 50%DOD. Which would be too much for a single v-belt. I would be doing one of: 1/ Buy the biggest alternator with an external regulator and lock it down to 75a 2/ Buy the biggest alternator and upgrade the pulley's to Serpentine and let the battery dictate the current Both the above give you some upgrade options in the future as
