Fish 0
So they refer obliquely to 'mechanical issues' forcing them to turn back 30 nm out from the Falklands. Is my understanding correct that the sail drive was those 'mechanical issues'? I read that somewhere but can't remember where. Not a good look for the supplier. I can't remember who supplied the sail drives and engines for the Volvo Ocean Race, don't think it was Yanmar, definitely wasn't Beta (although they do a good sail drive). Nah, I can't work out who the supplier is of sail drives and engines for the Volvo Ocean Race. Anyone know?
SloopJohnB 323
Not sure but I think come out of some European country.
MarkMT 68
At least they got back to the Falklands safely. Must have been a bit disconcerting to have mechanical problems as well as no sailing capability.
ex Elly 197
Using a trysail and a storm jib, on an old streetlamp pole.
muzled 140
Sounds like they're due in in the next few days. https://www.volvooceanrace.com/en/news/11496_Update-on-Vestas-11th-Hour-Racing-and-Scallywag.html Next leg starts on the 22nd, no rest for the wicked. ScottiE 174
a streetlamp pole - what a stroke of genius! Wait for one of them to go into the next edition of the safety regs!
Island Time 1,211
Not a new idea. We had a boat dismantled during sail Indonesia in 2010, and they used a galvanised lamppost as a temp replacement..... heavy as all hell, but when needs must!
muzled 140
They made it, awesome! https://www.volvooceanrace.com/en/video/11513_-When-the-leg-ended-the-adventure-began-.html
MarkMT 68
Interesting that the sailing team didn't make the trip. They swapped out for a delivery crew to get the boat to Itajaí.
raz88 96
Guess it gives them a better chance to eat their way back to their ideal weights, catch up on sleep etc. With the delivery time being unkown and the next start being on the 22nd, better to rest the race crew and have them fresh and ready to go for the next leg.
