Island Time 1,247
Just remember that there is a little setup to do. Hit the spanner on the menu bar - look in plugins. Dashboard is the one that lets you add instruments for display - it will display almost anything that you have the data for. Many of the cool functions for OCPN are added with "plugins". There are lots. You can get most of them from here; http://opencpn.org/ocpn/downloadplugins They include the google earth plugin, GRIB files, Celestial navigation, Radar overlays, Polar diagrams, weather routing, logbooks and many many more. The Idea is that the base unit is small, fast, and clean. You can add whatever complexity you like...
Clipper 346
i just want to view the charts at home, plan races, check distances etc. No realtime nav on a laptop, as my boat can be a bit damp.
tuffyluffy 76
No realtime nav on a laptop, as my boat can be a bit damp. and that's the reason I have an old laptop for the boat. Sooner or later its going to go swimming.
Island Time 1,247
Can be a problem on smaller boats, or race boats. Easy to fix - here is a ruggedized PC (waterproof) for $225 2nd hand http://www.akl.trademe.co.nz/computers/laptops/laptops/other/auction-817687292.htm Toughbooks are often available on trademe... Guest pwederell
As an aside, the scruffy little American bugger who overstayed his welcome in Opua the year before last and drew heavy criticsim from many, myself included, is one of the developers of this freeware so anyone using it (I do) is actually getting something for nothing from him. I discovered this when I interviewed him for a newspaper article. The guy was actually quite cool. 1
John B 106
Is Open CPN not available at all on Android , or just the new version ? I finally bought a tablet , navionics is OK, I thought I'd have that as well.
Island Time 1,247
There is an ongoing development of OpenCPN on android, but (at least last time I looked) it was running in a virtual linux environment. Required the tablet to be rooted. There is, and has never been an Andriod version of OpenCPN. PC and Mac (NOT IPAD) only.... Here is the linkto the Android Opencpn forum http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f134/opencpn-on-android-tablet-131106-4.html
erice 732
even though a 1990s, cheap tramping garmin can easily transfer tracks to a home computer none of my more expensive and younger plotters, (garmin, raytheon + simrad) seem to be able to transfer tracks without great expense and effort fortunately the hiking garmin connected to an old xp netbook with opencpn has no problem working as an inside plotter + recording tracks on an SD card and the windows 10 (was windows 7) computer at home has no problem opening them
erice 732
had a bit of a fright rounding waiheke's northern point, thumb point the land runs out into the water and there are 2 prominent rocks sticking up they also showed on the plotter was set top round them with sufficient distance but the plotter seemed to be saying they were dead-ahead was pondering this when suddenly realized that the 2 rocks above the water were shown on the plotter and could be seen but the plotter was saying we were heading straight for 2 rocks under the water that couldn't be seen
DrWatson 381
looks scary.... I've struggled to get my Garmin 72H to talk or send any information at all to my Macbook Pro. I've tried all sorts of things, plugins and cables etc. Garmin software downloaded from Garmin doesn't seem to actually work or do anything. So I'd seriously consider one of those little usb GPS dealies... http://www.trademe.co.nz/electronics-photography/gps/gps-accessories/auction-968290611.htm
erice 732
the usb pucks are probably the simplest solution http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/parts-accessories/navigation-devices/auction-969339497.htm no guarantees the above works with mac surprised the garmin won't
