Great weather for Tauranga race

Recommended Posts

Yes we have retired on crusader. It was real sloppy and light on the other side of corro and after some maths we worked out that there was not much future. No one to race against either. Had a great race so far, leading both ran tan and the open 60 all race.

Is 30 hours too short a time for this race? Or are people too busy in their lives to cope with a slow race? Looking at the entries, it is not as if it is a slow fleet. No old productipn boats like Maurauders, Davidson 28's, Raven 31's let alone Raven 26's and Harmonics! Do these boats no longer get cat 3 or everyone expects the race to be done and dusted in 10 hours so don't bother entering?

4 yachts still racing. Kaimai Express and Voodoo Lounge have just retired

Rio Sun has retired and is heading back to Auckland. Still racing are General Jackson, Timewarp, and Open Country currently approaching hole in the wall doing around 4 knots. Frenzy has motor issues and some boats getting low on fuel.

Stienlarger II is aproaching A beacon under motor and Arethusa motoring past Karewa Island

The problem was the sea state. A HUGE 4m swell bouncing back off the coromandel coast making an unbelievable seaway. That with no wind Made for a very unpleasant time and very slow progress. It was just horrible out there and very hard on the gear.

11:29 General Jackson passing hole in the wall and still sailing averaging 4 knots. Still racing but behind General Jackson are Timewarp and Open Country. Other boat motoring home.

Kinda glad we decided to give it a miss this year. Can't help but wonder what the answer is for this race. The organisation and the hospitality is great but the weather has been sh*t every year for a long time. Maybe is should be moved to Waitangi or Queens birthday weekend.

Queens birthday is guaranteed crap/cold/wild weather but likely to be westerly. Easter is regularly soft. My theory is its related to the full moon. Those are the two common factors in this race (which I have to say in qualification as I don't want the risk of being put in same category as Ken Ring).

La Rochelle lost interest around 1am when we despaired of making the time limit and had spent 5 hours getting from port Jackson to port Charles with tidal assistance.

I would say most people would prefer cold and rough to no wind at all. From January through to Mid april is always light unless there is a system going through.

Addem just be thankful La Rochelle motors at 7.5 knots a few wont get in until later tonight.

We know were La Rochelle lives good pier that.
