Nate 2
Any good for overnight?
curly12 1
Nope, very exposed to the east, pop down to Tutukaka for a sheltered spot, not far away
ex Elly 265
We have stayed in the little cove on the southern side just inside the entrance. It was very pleasant in settled westerly conditions.
Nate 2
Cheers. Due in Tuts Sunday, in Mimiwhangata now (which is stunning by the way). Was just wondering about hanging here or trying somewhere else.
Kevin McCready 83
https://www.yit.nz/anchorages Very sheltered from all but east quadrant winds. Anchor in 3-5 metres off the beach in the middle of the bay, good holding on sandy bottom.
Sail Rock 32
Matapouri tends to be bit rolley with the ground swell. As Elly said, the cove immediately south is better.
waikiore 485
Ah actually the cove to the south very open not an overnight anchorage, inside on the North side however is Marsden Cove lovely spot in settled weather but still can roll, or off the main beach in vv strong west can be good, was there on sunday. ex Elly 265
Another option is the next bay northwest, just around the headland: Whale Bay. There is good fishing off the rocks there.

We stayed in the alcove on the North side when going up to BOI this year. Good holding in a 20 knot SW but got an Easterly sea swell coming through that caused us to rock. A pretty bay but I don't think I'd stay there again in anything other than very settled conditions.

Sail Rock 32
The little cove to the south of Matapouri is called Parangarau. I have anchored there overnight several times during settled SW / sea breeze conditions - nice and quiet and no problems. Only exception was one night with a launch there pumping out load C&W music! Wayne-o 12
I am a few miles from there right now and it is as calm as anything. Until there's a groundswell or easterly I think it's a great time to try out normally rolly spots.
