ynot 45
So anyway found hansen valve leaking through the shaft behind the blue handle... Just so happens it was the poo pipe outlet. Decided to change it in the water... No biggie just a bit of water in the boat. But! Went through the plan something like this. Remove pipe.... Yuk floaty bits. Unscrew valve. Push emergency tapered wood bung in hole.... Most boats have these. Thread tape refit new valve! Easy. Not Found skin fitting had ribs on the inside which would not let tapered wooden plug tap in and rufly seal the hole... Bugger lots of ocean in the boat with the floaty bits that came out of the pipe. Luckily had mate to place hand over the foresaid hole. So.... How may boats have skin fittings that cannot be sealed with the tapered bung? Which kind of negates the need for them and makes them pointless. Is mine a rare one or are lots of them like that.? Standard looking skin fitting
Kevin McCready 83
I used the soft plastic pyramid bung.
Kevin McCready 83
Looks like this, though this isn't mine https://www.gaelforcemarine.co.uk/en/Forespar-TruPlug-Emergency-Bung/m-6575.aspx
Vorpal Blade 89
Use a huge carrot, with pressure they form themselves around the ribbed bits and seal very well. All Cat 1 boats should carry a variety of carrot sizes for this very purpose.

ynot 45
So are we saying that cat inspectors should ask to see ya carrot?
Black Panther 1,592
I have also had one fail. Not a nice thought.these things should be bulletproof.
Zozza 293
No wonder the growth in NZ root veggie inequality keeps widening with comments like that!!!! Not at all sincerely, Baldrick Life Member NZ Turnip Growers Collective
Black Panther 1,592
Disconnected hose. Water poured in irrespective of tap position. Unsettling to say the least.
ynot 45
Mine was leaking through shaft/spindle. I'm guessing they are not rated for poo and are only rated for irrigation. Boat is 20 years old not sure how old the valve was... Did not look very old. Anyway it was only a slow leak about 5lt every 3 days. More the point skin fittings should be smooth inside.... So from now on keeping carrot handy.
Steve Pope 243
I thought Hansen valves were marine rated?
Jason128 6
Yep, have had the exact same failure, leaking through the handle seal, on closed position. 10 year old boat. Previous owner could not find the leak, and fitted a extra bilge pump in the area to deal with it! Changed to the true design valve after that. We have not had much luck with the Hansen valves in industrial applications either, they seem to fail much faster than the true design or pvc valves
ynot 45
There website says yes to being marine rated. Blue handle for general use. Lylac handle for grey water. But does not mention black water. I'll find out Monday
