DBLRUM 8
Has anybody seen Navy Buoy recently (big yellow barrel) East of Browns Island? I sometimes find it hard to spot so therefore keep a damn good lookout as I wouldn't want to hit it but haven't found it the last few times out. Does anybody know whether it has been removed or am I going blind? No smart comments please! Thanks Ian
ex Elly 229
It was there on the 28th of August. Could have sunk since then. Very hard to spot since it is all rust. Really needs painting, or some other high visibility added. It is listed as unlit in the latest notice to mariners:
DBLRUM 8
Thanks for that ex Elly. We had 6 pairs of eyes aboard on Saturday & didn't see it so maybe it is on the bottom!
Sudden5869 17
BBYC sometimes uses Navy Buoy on Harbour Courses. We used it about three weeks ago. There was an inflatable round buoy instead of the old steel barrel buoy. Not exactly easy to see... We just assumed it was a temporary measure to repair the old Navy Buoy. It had been getting rustier and lower in the water lately....
DBLRUM 8
Hi Sudden5869. Thanks for the update. It appears that no one has seen the steel barrel recently so maybe it has been removed temporarily or permanently.
Dagwood 69
Can't actually remember seeing it being used and given it's in busy piece of water, been poorly lit for years, as well as a fairly rubbish radar target, the risk / benefit equation didn't add up in my book. DBLRUM 8
Thanks for your comments. I did see it being used to tie a frigate up to when they were decommissioning the Canterbury & Wellingon (if I have the names right) I am talking years ago though. If we lose this one and northern leading yellow, we'd have no valid courses (joking).
waikiore 454
We (RNZYS) raced around the inflatable replacement two weeks ago, it is harder to spot than the old steel barrel but in the same place.
DBLRUM 8
Awesome thanks for the clarification waikiore. At least I know that I am not looking for the rusty yellow one now. Cheers Ian
