mcp 34
As the title says, I'm looking for a replacement Yanmar SD60 saildrive. I'm hoping someone knows where one is for sale as I am dreading what the cost of a new replacement is. Any help or leads appreciated!
harrytom 689
Sails drives seem to to be a major concern, hit something and you a large hole, continually here seals leak, cannot see how they would be less drag than a folding prop on a shaft with a strut. For the price you would expect them to be built proof.

We have had no issues with leaks of any sort, its much smoother and as for the Drag I dont think there is anything in it either way. The thrust line is horizontal so its more efficient and there is no assymetric loading on the prop, installation was a doddle. At the time (5 yrs ago) we were quoted $16,800 inc GST for the complete unit sans propellor (available immediately) .A new 20 Hp Beta engine (marinised Kubota) at that time was $13,000 + freight and and lead time was 6 months. If you hit something such that you had a large hole where the sail drive was , well the missing saildrive would be the least of your concerns because it has the keel in front of it and the rudder behind !

mcp 34
I crumbled and purchased a new one and to be fair, it was more reasonably priced that I expected. However, I'm interested in the pros and cons discussion that has started in this post.

There is a good pros n cons analysis at this link it is centred on catamarans but most of the observations also apply to monohulls https://www.multihullcompany.com/saildrives-or-straight-shafts-which-is-best-for-me/#:~:text=Straight shafts require precision engine, more vibration than sail drives. The authors conclusion is "Getting hung up on shafts or sail drives as a major purchasing concern is quite unwarranted. If having a shaft is something you are so convinced you must have, bear in mind you will live with all the advantages as well as the disadvantages noted above. More importantly, you will learn very quickly when you start to shop for a cat that 95% of the builders today have all concluded that the advantages of sail drives far outweigh their disadvantages on cats below 50 feet and are therefore superior for use in the smaller modern catamaran. I happen to agree."
Stuarth44 1
as a builder, if I were building for myself, I'd put one in on anything up to 40 feet as I build in alu I'd use twin centreline bars aft leading into one but seein' as I had a stroke, cancer and major PE and jus turned 78, I think my building days are done, I still dream of a high lats sailboat built with 8mm plating
