2011 Coastal Classic

What Shipping movements do we expect Friday. Ridiculous what happened to B division on Friday for the second time in three weeks. to put a boat out straight in front of the fleet is irresponsible. Someones going to cut it to fine and get killed.

G'day all!

Hope everyone is well and getting readied for next weekend!

Saillonline is buddied with the Coastal Classic for the first time so for any of you unable to sail in reality and fancy the idea of testing your nav skills, then hop along to Sailonline.. 'tis all free to sail on equal terms!

At least a couple of SOLers will be sailing in the real race and we hopefully will have their boats on-screen (if not, then at least we will link to their tracker pages). So far we know of:

NZL_WairuaExpress on OpenCountry

NZL_yachtyakka on Crac-a-Jac

Anyone else? Would be great to be able to link to trackers or get race updates that we can feed into chat or even have pics we can put on the SOL homepage!!

Tell your friends/family to have a snoop at SOL.. OK so we don't have tides/currents but we are racing Seacarts this year to give the faster boats a bit of a challenge!!

AND

Will there be any webcams/live-streaming video of the start? One of the major ways to create excellent interactivity and raise the profile of a real race is through webcam-viewing!!

Othewise....

FAIR WINDS to all racing! Y'all will be being cheered on by folks around the globe on Sailonline, that's for sure!!

Don't hold your breath DDF, unlikely to hold up commercial shipping for a bunch of spoilt "rich white men" in their toy yachts.

Golf is worse for rich pricks Mr Squid. Comments based on -

Autosol std - $12.95 tube

Autosol Marine - $14.95 tube

But Autosol Golf - $19.95 tube.

How's that for a scientific observation?

What's autosol?

RC - trying to work on video now, but won't be live, we tried it last year and essentially the internet here was too slow to make it decent quality. One day it will happen. (plus there is cost involved).

To clarify what Squid said: we could upload the video to the servers fine, but if we turned the quality too high, the testers we had couldn't download it without buffering, etc. It should be getting better, but another year of improving internet speeds should help.

OH Lame. I enjoyed last years live start so hopefully telecom stop hindering the unbundling process so we can get faster Internet and especially as Im not sailing in the coastal any more  Looks like its sail online for me

TVS are still aiming to be there - but it's tight.

Assuming that they are, there will be two Orma 60s on the startline this year. The other one is an older boat which has been modified for cruising, called Titi Nui. Details on the Coastal website pressroom.

Gotta disagree with you there.

If someone (or a lot of people) call POAL up and tell them about the actual start times for the race they may well re arrange shipping around it.

Sadly last year the people in the office only knew of 1 start time - I was unaware that they did not know the full details.

Soooo - if you want to be proactive send them an email or phone them.

You may not be aware that shipping has been rearranged when management found out about a start time that involved many yachts in the eastern part of the harbour.

Another time I remember a ship being delayed when Harbour control found out that there was a large number of yachts finishing a race in the early hours of the morning.

Just saying if they (POAL) is not aware of what is happening then how can you expect them to chang plans - has the organising yacht club contacted them??

and by them I also mean Harbour Control - you can get them on VHF 12

No worries - I had suggested (to management) in the past that the port could place into their system the date and time of larger events to prevent conflicts / improve safety / reduce complaints,

Never know if enough people ask for it it may happen.

Cannot see much happening about wed night racing as the time lost to move ships would be significant as it can take a long time for all the yachts starting a race to pass by the wharves.....

Don't live on Paritai Dr. anymore - out the other direction - so haven't been there in a couple of years, but used to get there early and there'd be ~5-10 queuing, by the time we left there'd be 40 people waiting and two choices of bread left. Tried the one on Quay Street once, and it was better, but only just.

You'd think after all these years they'd get a clue - or at least a racing calendar.
