Guest Posted June 4, 2012 Share Posted June 4, 2012 and what a blow Beau Geste has withdrawn from the Auckland to Noumea leg of Evolution Sails Sail Noumea after suffering structual damage. They are now heading to Norfolk Island which is 101 nautical miles east south east of their current location. They have advised the rescue coordination center who are now monitoriing and managing the situation. More details to come from the organisers shortly. Link to post Share on other sites

In other Fastnet action, there was disaster in IRC Z this afternoon for co-skippers Karl Kwok and Jim Swartz’s Farr 80 Beau Geste (HKG). The yacht suffered a ‘structural problem’ while mid-away across the Celtic Sea en route to the Rock. She has since turned her bow back towards Land’s End. Link to post Share on other sites

Nobody is hanging about in the downstairs lounge of the freight train! There are a few green faces. The boys feel gutted for Beau Geste and hope they make Norfolk safely. Hopefully they can get the tracker back up and working. yay. v5 is back online and it looks as if they are racing and not trying to head to Beau Geste who is still currently holding first on handicap even with slowing down to 8 knots for several hours. The Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) is coordinating the rescue on board the 24-metre Beau Geste yacht, which is about 100 nautical miles east of Norfolk Island. The Beau Geste was participating in the Auckland to Noumea yacht race. The yacht's skipper called the rescue centre at 7pm to say the yacht had suffered damage to its decking and hull, and was continuing to deteriorate. The cargo ship Winchester Strait responded to an RCCNZ call to nearby vessels and was making its way to the stricken yacht. The captain of the ship estimated they would reach the yacht early tomorrow morning. RCCNZ search and rescue mission coordinator John Dickson said Beau Geste had an experienced crew of racers and that remaining on board the damaged yacht while help arrived was the best course of action at this point. They had good communications with the yacht through a satellite phone. The yacht was equipped with two ten-man life rafts. A Royal New Zealand Air Force P3 Orion was also on standby to assist if needed. Official race website Sailnoumea.com reported at 8.20pm that the Beau Geste had withdrawn from the Auckland to Noumea leg of Evolution Sails Sail Noumea after suffering structural damage. Beau Geste crewman and race sponsor Evolution Sails director Rodney Keenan sent the last update from the Beau Geste, published on Sailnoumea.com at 10.27am yesterday morning. There was no mention of any problems or damage to the yacht. "Well we are coming up to lunch time on day 3 of the Evolution Sails Auckland Noumea race here on the Beau Geste (or as my children call it the Dragon Boat). The start was as I am sure most of you are aware painfully slow until just on sunset when a light South west flow gave us a little push off." Mr Keenan said Team Vodafone had overtaken them the day before, but the weather made it impossible to catch up. They expected to encounter winds of up to 45 knots. "The option to take the high road and stay out of the pending front disappeared yesterday so unfortunately unlike Vodafone we are in for a little bit of a hammering tonight through until sometime mid morning Tuesday. Ad Feedback "Hopefully after the front passes the wind will shift Westerly enabling us to tack on to port and head to Noumea." Beau Geste is owned by Hong Kong business man Karl Kwok and is skippered by former America's Cup helmsman Gavin Brady. Cargo ship Winchester Strait, which had responded to RCCNZ's call for help, was released overnight. "The Beau Geste is working to get as close to Norfolk Island as possible and they are making good progress," RCCNZ search and mission coordinator Tracy Brickles said. "The crew will wait for daybreak (around 7am NZ time) to properly assess the damage on board and ideally look to anchor the yacht as close to shore as they can." A nearby bulk carrier was available to provide shelter to Beau Geste if needed. Wind and sea conditions were easing, Brickles said.
