Clutches on mainsheet

RAW

Recommended Posts

I have a traveller on the cabintop and the mainsheet comes back to a cam cleat. Because of the high loading my wife finds it almost impossible to release under load. Has anyone used a clutch? Will it release under load? When open will the mainsheet run freely? Any brand of clutch preferable? Other alternatives?

I have the same arrangement on AC but it's extremely rare for the mainsheet to get so heavily loaded that it's difficult to open the clutch. If this does happen then the remedy is to take the load off the clutch using the winch, the same way I do with the mainhalyard (assuming you have a winch on the cabin top)?

And if you have a winch on the cabin top another option is to not use the clutch but just keep the mainsheet mounted on the winch and adjust like a jib sheet?

Another thing which helped hugely was to replace my entire 6:1 mainsheet system with new Ronstan blocks and new mainsheet slightly smaller (think I went from 14mm to 12mm) - KM will remember he supplied the goods - and the result is that the mainsheet now runs itself out nice and smoothly even in quite a light breeze. But with my old system it needed a stiff breeze to pull out without my help.

Suggest a chat with KM (Knot Me on these forums).

Spinlocks are ok but seem to chew up the rope a bit. -Technically these 'clutches' are really jammers

Lewmar clutched are great, but more moving parts. They're the only clutches i'd trust for small boat backstays

Easy lock are very average.

If it is a spinlock it will most probably chew up the outer sleeve of your mainsheet with that sort of loading....regardless of brand if you have sufficient winches (with self tailer) use one for it ..is much easier on the sheet..

I don't know AC, I don't think she has the muscles to be able to pull up halyards, let alone breaking her nails when holding onto the sheets!

How irrelevant! :P

That winch in the bottom left is electric/hydraulic so what AC said stands

We are getting more and more clutch issues. Rope technology is moving a lot faster than the associated bits technology. If you have issues with clutches chewing ropes there is an easy and cheap fix but it's one that needs to be done before 'it's too late' i.e. before the cover is trashed.

Yes we can recover entire ropes, assuming the core isn't rooted. On dyneemas, vectrans etc we do it often, on std polyesters it's probably knot worth the effort.

And No, I was meaning you can sleeve the section where it gets clutched with a high performance cover, be that aimed at heat, chafe, extra grip or in this case sharp teeth. There are a range of high performance covers depending on what you are trying to do or eliminate. In this case I think I'd go with a Vectran/Zylon blend. Knot cheap but you only need 1mt. Guessing at around $25/30 plus 20 mins to install. And you can do the install if you like, it's knot tricky.

We suggest this to people often but in 50% of the cases they think we are taking the piss. It appears if enough low knowledge up-sell supermarkets say you can't, us in the specialist lots of knowledge Deli are wrong :? You'd be amazed at just how hard it is to save punters money at times.

Funny we used to have our mainsheet going to a clutch and changed to a cam cleat for exactly the same reason' wouldn't release quickly under load, ended running around the cabintop winch then to the camcleat easy to release under load no matter what.

If she was holding onto the 'sheets' that tightly Megwyn, I don't think I'd be thinking much about her sailing abilities...... :shifty:
