  1. Hey Martin, I'm in a very similar boat (pun intended) to you.. Learned to sail at Port Nic' just before Covid, and made a start at making the dream come true last Novemberish. I bought a Compass Southerly 23 off a guy in Napier, and it's now afloat in Mana Marina. It's been a hell of a learning curve, and I've only actually been out sailing once, so far. I am enjoying being a boat owner though, it's even more expensive than you think, and can be frustrating, and worrisome. But it's bloody magic as well, all at the same time. I've been finding it really easy to find excuses to

YNZ needs to take note, they seemed to be well down the track of following the old WS leadership policies. From the new CEO, who seems to pretty on the ball: " In my opinion far too much emphasis is put on the Olympics at the expense of other elements of our sport, and this unhealthy emphasis is not actually reaping rewards."

  3. Absolutely right, and YNZ have been obsessed with the Olympics for decades for the same financial reasons. The rest of NZ grass roots yachting and I include keelboats in this hardly gets a look in.

  4. Agreed. Our club has dicussed that we secede from the union. We pay a large amount for very little in return. The 5 ring circus eclipses every other avenue .There is a token visit from Regional rep occasionally for centreboarders. Nothing ever for keelboats. We are a cash cow for YNZ Take away the Olympic funding and there's the conumdrum for the executive so they have to focus on medal count for their own well being. I think we pay $35 a head . For what ? Half the members are social members but YNZ has that one covered. Not to mention double and triple dipping for people who belong to mor

  6. Farr 13.99 but actually 14.5m - bit of builders licence used. Draft is 1.5m board up. Wrote a bit about her and sister ships here https://crew.org.nz/forum/index.php?/topic/18586-good-idea/&tab=comments#comment-246599

  7. Sounds like it's faulty. Plug it in, set it on auto, then turn the whole unit one way then the other. One should cause the arm to retract, the other to extend. If it does not, probably a failed compass. Usually and issue caused by a hard knock, or simply being in a moving boat for a long time. The compass unit hangs on very fine wires (so they don't restrict the compass movement), and they can break....
