  1. bugger me! you learn something new every day...
  2. Belt? But it's still mechanical (I was being a bit tongue in cheek, there...)
  3. So how does that prop shaft work?
  4. Should've asked him about instaradicate... It's the reset device that removes unwanted pests...

This one, I think, And the diesel oven that goes with it. if the budget will stretch that far...

Yeah, back over here for a little longer. But we've been back and forth a lot lately as Dad's running out of time and Mum's dementia is kicking in, leaving decisions untaken. We'll keep the boat up Northern Germany for a wee bit, once she's launched - Skandinavia and Ostsee is where we'd like to sail rather than the med. The North may be colder but it's more peaceful and fewer ripoffs. Plenty of time to sort that out, but the lifting keel, carbon mast and vinyl ester hull are definite options to tick and need to be decided early on.

Life changes... We're not so far in financially with the other one that we can't change tack, and the hardware we've already bought will go straight onto the new build. We were in the process of finding a workshop. Rent is about 3-4000 a month here in Switzerland, and about 1500-2000 a month in Germany (1h drive away). That cost (dead loss) becomes considerable, so we looked at buying, but again prohibitively expensive, or worse, buying something that is another project so that the first project can be done. Too many projects, only one life. A reassessment over the weekend while w

Eventually, we'll keep it up north on a mooring. But it's going to be a long slow process to even get on the water. But at least there is a more-or-less definite date. As progress is made, I'll update with photos etc, but that's a long way off. they won't start the build for well over a year... Interesting to note, the boat is designed to be beached and has optional alloy legs for just that...

Well, that all seems good enough for me. Deposit paid.

What are people's opinions on these? They seem to deliver the goods, Disp. of just 3600kg, 36 foot, ocean rated (ClassA) and apparently go like a scalded cat, and have swing keel allowing access to shallow water...
  12. That does sound like a potential theft situation. Services in attendance?
  13. MH, what and how did you fit it? This is a crucial "winner" to ensure happy crew, and I'm willing to go to quite great lengths to ensure its existence. I've found that even a normal smartdrive will run 2 loads easily from 24v 200Ah through inverter. Of course a top leader's not really the ticket on a boat, but a smaller front loader. Any specialist marine versions? Also, anyone collect rain water while cruising?
  14. My comfort level is standing headroom, a decent place to take a crap, and a warm dry bed I can sit up in and not crack my forehead on a deck beam...
  15. I like the idea of a larger, swing keel yacht + large haulout trailer + deck stepped mast on tabernacle. Keep on a mooring but can haulout easily for regular maintenance. Would work particularly well if you have property very close to a boat ramp and can haul with a boat tractor...
  16. So how does that work if you have LiPO4 batteries? The venting is to prevent explosion risk from H2 liberation. I'm not sure that's a big deal for Li Batteries...
  17. KM, i don't think you should give up on the inverter so easily, fusing is easy. I have these, between the panels and the charger, between the charger and the battery, and between the battery and the inverter. They feel really cool to use - quite industrial - but you'd wanna pull them out before the water hits your inverter if you're sinking. I'll install the same on my new build, because I want a 240v AC circuit, and I already have a spare 24v/240v 1600watt sinewave inverter. Which inverter did you get KM? And which batteries? Sounds like you have a crap load of power available
  18. John, can you give us an update when this is sorted? Just so we don't all go round thinking you were screwed out of 3K if it ends up being all good...
  19. Well, I need some some time to crunch the survey numbers more thoroughly but: Rich? On the surface yea. but there's a lot more to it. If we take the median per person income to be 45k (NZ June 2014), we see that if we look at household income and make an assumption that there are at least 2 people dependent upon that income (for more than half the cases this is true) then: about 38% of responders earn about the median or under the median. I can do more in depth analyses and give greater clarity. But these people are not what we'd call rich, but they still manage to own

  21. So, at the end of the day, if you either have no electricity on your boat, or if you care completely self contained, you don't need this eWOF thing? That's my take on the whole thing. But as soon as you plug anything into the marina 240 volts supply on the finger, you need an eWOF? So if your boat has zero electrical circuits, and I mean zero, you can't run a dehumidifier?
  22. Yeah I should have included a location option to try to account for the auckland effect. It's always difficult when designing surveys, to be sure you ask the right questions, and sometimes you only see these things as the information starts to come in. looking at where were' at at the moment, I could have been smarter with answer choices, but I think it will give a clear enough picture. I'm making a little summary of the longer survey now, we have 24 respondents on the longer survey at the moment, and a healthy 62 respondents on the short survey at the top of this page. People can stil
  23. OK a more comprehensive survey for those who can be arsed filling in the details again.... No names of boats or identifying features please, and limited to 100 participants -but over 50 people filled in the little poll, so go for it. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/9NKFVKP KM, I was limited to 10 Q so couldn't include your suggestions - but think I might start another survey if there is interest. Can only be filled in once form each device, but can be edited after you've competed it, so if you suddenly remember you own a flying machine, you can go back and add it.
  24. The software maxes out at three independent questions. I can set up a survey monkey to include these various points, and link one response to another so I can do some better analyses- maintaining anonymity, of course. We can gauge real objective answers like financial situation against the subjective and emotive decision making factors. Purchase price /decisions are historical factors, rather than a current snapshot of situation.
