  1. Anyone know how to entice the Ponsonby Scow out to play? Would love to see them face off with BP, now that David has worked out which ropes to pull.
  2. Dunno but we'd probably quality. Also possibly youngest crew member at 13 months. And lets not forget Biggest drop in placings, we got second place in the trailer yacht 2013
  3. Updated forecast shows fine and warm with light north easterly winds
  4. A slab of your favourite beer or RTD? 24 bottles/cans, your choice. Or how about this? I bought a house then bought a boat. The family love the house but hate the boat! I want to take them for cruise over summer but the boat has a small danforth, so I'm worried that if we camp ashore, the boat may be gone in the morning. And because I just bought those things, I'm too broke for a new anchor. Ok, so it's only partially true, but you get the idea! And if neither of those work, how much folding stuff?
  5. Come on folks, I've got a cast of thousands lined up for the night, lets make it memorable for them. Oh, and it'll probably be the first time euphoria has ever heard a start gun. Two days before christmas, lets make this race worthy of the sponsors and this website! Lets break the hundy!
  6. No doubt. I've done it myself, in a storm, in the dark. The give-away was there was no Marsden flare, and a major lack of nav buoys. I must've spent a good 20 minutes trying to pick up fairway light, then decided that I was in the wrong place. Also, with big winds we had that night, there was no fn way we were going to get close to land we couldn't identify. One other thing. I grew up sailing in Whangarei, and knew, or at least knew of, pretty much all the experienced sailors there during the '80s and '90s. I've never heard his name before, its a small town, with a small sailing commun
  7. Such a shame they never built the canal. Could be a lot of fun going coast to coast by water!
  8. Not too sure, but haven't the winds been in the southerly quarter for the past few days? So the so-called storm he hit should have helped, unless he broke something. To quote someone who rescued me once... Does your eight years experience include pushing toot around the bath?
  9. Ah, so you've done this race before? staggered start with the first boat away at 5:45pm. Usually 2 or 3 different courses to make it more interesting, and the handicapper somehow manages to organise 100 odd boats sailing different courses and starting at different times to all finish within seconds. From memory head toward your side of the harbour the instant you cross the finish, otherwise be prepared to wait for a mile-long wall of boats finishing before you can get back across. I made that mistake once, finished near the front and then headed north to keep away from the other boat
  10. Thanks David, I'll keep it in mind, but hoping to find somewhere without any boats nearby... I'm still learning to drive this thing, it doesn't really spin like the trailer yacht! And I quite like your paint job on your boat rather than on mine!
  11. If it's just for the holiday, why not just buy or borrow a portapotti? Will give a few days between empties. I think ScottiE has a spare. No harm in asking.
  12. Wondering if I should cut the rear beam off the gbe, it's just too high to get up from the dinghy!
  13. Is there anywhere in the westhaven area I can get all the passengers to muster and board the boat on the night? I don't want the hassle of getting a dozen people out to the mooring by dinghy.
  14. Give Stanley Marine a ring. They have a shedload of little oddities. They're at whangarei town basin.
  15. I know, but I'm suffering premature enthusiasm!
  16. Long range forecast looks promising. 18-23degrees. Fine. ESE 15kt gusting 30. Best be calling the heavies and checking the reef points.
  17. I'm not sure your holiday counts as a little bit. From what I can ascertain, Euphoria has been out of the racing scene for eternity.
  18. So, 2 cats and 4 sleds. And I'm the shortest boat! Unsure how many crew, still waiting on the RSVPs to come back.
  19. Any sort of entry list yet? Ideally with boat types so I can get excited and come up with dumb ideas? This is the highlight of my year you know, I look forward to it for 11 months! Then reflect for a month before starting again. Perhaps I need to get out more!
  20. Does anyone know the procedure for securing a dinghy to the rack at Little Shoal? I've bought an old seabird sailing dinghy, so easy enough to lock it on (cable through the centrecase) but unsure who to contact for permission. Or are they just there for the use of mooring owners?
  21. I've raced on Delinquent (the top one in erice's list) a few times with Leo when he first bought her. Agreed a fantastic boat, but personally I'd rather have a carpenter. Maybe my memory is dodgy, but I felt Lollipop (Carpenter) was roomier. That said, when considering everything, the prices, and the fact that you can have proper one design racing could certainly push the 88's into favour. I have heard (although second hand info, I have no real experience of it) that Y88's get blown around a bit without a fair chunk of crew weight on the rail. I've witnessed it also with a Farr 9.2.
  22. Hmm I feel the same way, tired, sore, and happy! Took euphoria on the 8.5 cruise to riverhead on Saturday. Late as usual, and ploughed a few underwater roads on the way up, but met a bunch of great guys and had a good sail in each direction. Even the family enjoyed the day out, especially the kids who don't really like leaning over.
  23. I'm also a little biased, based on previous experience and observations. I've sailed on a Carpenter a few times, and they are excellent boats. I would have bought one years ago if it had been a possibility. Good layout too, nice and comfy. Probably the only displacement keelboat I've ever really liked, unless you count an NZ37. The only D28 I've really noticed was one that raced in Whangarei, and was always near the back. It did seem to stand up in some pretty mean wind tho, so if time isn't crucial, could also be worth a look.
  24. Oi! Back off on Huntly you lot, some of us need to live there! Where else can you still buy a 4 beddie on 1/4 acre for under 300k? And commute to the land of jafa every day.
  25. Has anyone tried a self tacking jib on a gbe? Or any other similar size cat? I have some track and a car at home, thought it could go across the main beam, not curved as it is only short. Could be great for the no. 3 jib. Any thoughts?
