  1. Yeah Im not going to put it on for a $1 reserve as it's worth a few thousand at least -- good masts are not cheap. Just was after an idea of both mast, and sails including furler, if its $4K, $5K, $6K or more if in quite good shape. I understand a brand new mast these days for a 28 foot plus boat, would be north of $8K .... and that is without all the fittings, stays - then a suit of sails on top....might start auction at $3K no reserve....
  2. I sailed about 20 years ago when I wanted to learn about sailing, on Chubasco for a day with Mike Kalaguher (the then owner who also wrote a very good book on the Sounds New Years Murders) - felt a very solid boat from memory. Saw it for sale on Tme not too long ago.
  3. Just out of curiosity, I'd be interested. I did follow that auction with interest
  4. Selling yeah. I sail junk rigs, but have a second hand bermudan sloop rig with furler as per my OP that I might stick on Trade Me at some stage. $50K new sounds ridiculous, but I'm not in the loop and I don't doubt your right - no wonder people buy second hand
  5. You could be onto something Steve. If MC gear works well at 100K on a bike, it is sure to work even better on my speedy vessel roaring along at 5 knots Edit: Where's KM when you need him? He flies around on an MC too. I hear he even keeps a eye on this forum 😉
  6. How long did it take for the coating to shred? I was thinking of buying.a set of Gill WW gear but you have given me pause...
  7. Auckland, City of Sails, but soon nowhere to haul. your boat and DIY.
  8. Gulf Harbour quite well protected from the northerlies...
  9. Yep fully charged , no leaks. That is encouraging thanks, Psyche
  10. I've a delay in being able to get my marine electrical system installed. The batteries - standard Deep Cycle 100ah AGMs - have been in the boat close to a month. Boat is in a marina, so I cannot leave my boat unattended 24/7 with a trickle charger. How long before they are kaput via self discharge?
  11. Slight 'Fred Drift' - I have tremendous respect for Maori when it comes to their maritime history, (so consequently have no issue if they want to help protect the Hauraki Gulf if only in a symbolic manner). Coming all the way from Tahiti in those outrigger canoes, navigating visually only via the stars, ocean currents, wave formation, bird life near land etc....absolutely awesome. You can imagine the bashing those outrigger canoes / rafts would have taken when they hit the temperate / variable zones on the way to New Zealand from Tahiti...just awe inspiring maritime skill.
  12. Previous to current refit, rented cradle off B/Haualge for three years! heh heh 😀 Good luck with it all bro Cheers
  13. Hi again @Stand By I think the $25 & change per week to rent the quality cradles that B/Haulage provide is well worth it -- will save you faffing around looking to buy one, they will make one to suit your boat if they don't have one in stock, and Luke (who now runs the place after the passing of Peter) is a good stand up bloke to deal with.
  14. Boat Haulage will rent you the above at about #100 per month
  15. Raven 26 then. No question about it. Cheap, oodles of room for a 26 footer - more like a 30 footer, and can take a lot of punishment weather wise Did I mention that my friend Annie Hill converted a Raven to Junk RIg a few years ago?.... heh heh, any excuse to plug Junk Rig!
  16. "Probably still a bargain for the new owner though". Not sure about that. Owner admitted engine was old and not trouble free -- figure $25-30K for a new one...and then you have installation fees and other things that go with diesels.....
  17. Just keep a careful eye on these two things below if you do buy the Chico or any other 40-50 year old yacht
  18. Yep - especially if you have the skills to DIY Get IT (Matt) to order some 'Bed It' butyl tape, get an epoxy repair kit, and go for it. Others may have a different view, and of course who knows the extent of current issues on that Chico till you get up close and personal, but at between $5K - $10K it is not financially life changing if it turns into a fu*k up. Just my thoughts, but there are plenty more experienced fellas on here than me that might disagree, and I would go with what they say over me any day...I am still learning this sailing / boats game
  19. As Kevin indicates above, and BP said earlier on, I think what should be reiterated so as not to scare off the OP -- he could definitely buy that Chico, Auriga, and not do a damn thing to it and liveaboard and sail it most anywhere around NZ as is, then sell it off a few years later. Or he could decide after that time that she is worth saving, and putting money into and with a few years experience of living aboard under his belt he will know what he wants to do to the boat to reshape it in his image if he keeps her. Unfortunately, that is not my nature, and when I buy a boat I have to r
  20. There is another Chico on Trademe at the moment, and I like the lower profile cabin top, but teak decks! Owner wanting $28K for that, where the bill to get the decks professionally fixed would cost that at least.
  21. Double that ....and if you were me you could then triple it because I would have to junk rig her. Then I would want my special watertight companionway hatch, which means rebuilding the cockpit. Then I'd strip off all fixtures and fittings and rebed them in butyl. Then more rabbit holes would open as is usually the case...so I am probably up to $120K by now.... So yeah, I was jesting, one boat is enough for me at the moment, but at least the current owner is realistic and put this one on a 'no reserve' on T/Me
