  1. That's just plain bad manners
  2. Decide on what your priorities are, standing headroom would be number one for me and unless you buy a launch you probably wont get that until your are getting into the 38 foot plus range.
  3. The last thing we need is water police handing out fines, being stopped and told off in front of friends and family is often embarrassment enough, there are plenty of laws you can hit someone with if we want to go there.
  4. It would be better to encourage people attend a boating education course
  5. Force them to join crew?
  6. Heres an update, the winner Harry Dodson and his team went to Long Beach for the Seawanhaka Cup https://www.sail-world.com/news/249916/Seawanhaka-International-Challenge-Cup-overall I'd say that was a pretty damn fine showing from the RNZYS and shows the quality of our local sailors For inquiring minds the Stewart 34 team had a pretty good go at the MRX finals, we were the only boat to take guns from Harry and we finished second. The winning team was a cut above everyone and fully deserved the trip to Long Beach
  7. I think the article is a bit of a classic NZ country town no news, news i.e Mrs Jones cat got stuck in a tree. "Big boat has to alter course and made lots of honking noise so we got really excited" I would not be making sweeping judgements without talking to the sailors, we know they were in the wrong but why? Most people do not play chicken with big boats. Anyone who has sailed the entrance knows about big ships so I suspect they may have been newbies, but they could also have had engine failure and it doesn't look like a lot of wind.
  8. Commercial interests do not own the harbour, it's shared with many different waka. Unfortunately some of the small boaters forget that might is right 100% of the time! Most people are respectful of a 10,000 ton behemoth bearing down on them but it is very easy to underestimate how fast these box boats travel and how limited they are to course changes because they simply cant leave the main channel.
  9. And that is why its so hard to make a one size fits all rule, clearly there is common sense and they are enforced at the discretion of the HM. There is a difference between a 50ft Riv doing 25kts than a poor suffering yachtie tacking against a 2 kt tide in 5kt of breeze
  10. The biggest problem I experience is vessel wash from launch operators going too fast. The rules are pretty basic. 91.6 Speed of vessels (1) No person may, without reasonable excuse, propel or navigate a vessel (including a vessel towing a person or an object) at a proper speed exceeding 5 knots: (a) within 50 metres of any other vessel, raft, or person in the water; or (b) within 200 metres of the shore or of any structure; or (c) within 200 metres of any vessel or raft that is flying Flag A of the International Code of Signals (divers flag). and 91.7 Wake S
  11. what is this stern cleat you speak off?
  12. You have a good point there AA, certainly when anyone with a few million can buy a huge high speed launch and literally be sent on their way from the brokerage with a pat on the back. My self interest is showing, I like the freedom we have on the water.
  13. I am not a fan of regulation, lets all appreciate how good we have it. I am sure there are many many self interested parties who would love to impose a licensing regime, fines, boat registration, safety inspections water police etc- new agencies and ceo jobs galore, politicians claiming to have cleaned up the seas from the reckless endangerment of ourselves by ourselves. Best thing is that people get educated and the HM gives out stiff fines for the above behaviour, which is essentially not keeping a lookout.
  14. Mr Huh did not see the 18.3-metre long SV Arcturus until it was only 15-20 metres in front of him. He did not have time to disengage the autopilot or slow down before the collision. Of the ten people on board the SV Arcturus, the skipper’s 13-year-old son was thrown into the harbour by the force of the collision and two passengers (a man and 12-year-old boy) jumped in for fear of injury. The skipper pulled the two boys back on board but could not reach the man who had drifted away. "Mr Huh then turned his launch to try to rescue the man but almost ran him over before colliding with SV Arc
  15. Here Pelagian in the RNI, looks great but someone at SSANZ cant spell
  16. this was on the way home so no fighting
  17. Think all S34's are famous
  18. Theres a sika product thats used for in teak decks that may work 298? not 100% sure but call the tech support and ask since it's about 15 years ago that I did it. Pour it in, the only trick is to make sure you have a suitable drain hole for the water
  19. Heard the same rumour, you might have competition if its not a beat the whole way around 😂

A lot of lofts get some of their sails made offshore, design and IP is what you pay for plus brand support. When they are competing in a tight margin market and everyone else is doing it then the only way to compete is matching them. I dont know the numbers in the sail business but typically offshore lofts that use the same cloth are about 1/2 to 2/3 the cost of NZ made. Once you buy them you are on your own- forget about after sales service! I am in two minds about this ( I have never done it btw) the first is sending work offshore that could be done by a NZ'er and help our local economy
