Didn't see this one coming... https://mailchi.mp/rmyc/malta-altus-challenge-accepted-as-challenger-for-36th-americas-cup
  2. ...which maybe suggests that the amount of 3rd party cover should depend on displacement.
  3. Team France won't be coming (though they weren't one of the 8 in the speculation above)... https://www.adonnante.com/46134-36e-americas-cup-ac72-team-france-renonce-a-la-36eme-americas-cup/ I can't see a date on this, but I'm assuming it's new.
  4. What year was that? Remarkable when you think about it today that 9 new 34fters of a single class could hit the water in a single summer. And as you imply, we can't really blame the cost.
  5. Interesting speculation about who the new 8 may be, including a possible Chinese team led by Craig Monk. https://www.yachtracing.life/eight-new-americas-cup-challenges-lodged/ I imagine a Chinese team might have significant funding directly or indirectly from the Chinese government, who I'm guessing would be pretty highly motivated to capture a trophy called the "America's Cup."
  6. And the 31 just AU$137,500 (the FarEast not the Dehler)
  7. This caught my eye... Also in a separate blog post... https://www.stanleyparis.com/single-post/2018/11/26/Here-I-go-Again---4th-and-Final-Attempt---Solo-non-stop-Circumnavigation-%E2%80%93-Nov-29th

  9. Unless I mis-read the article the first time (and I'm pretty certain I didn't), the piece about the Monaco announcement has been altered. Now reads...
  10. And Sail-World claims to have an NDA with a different team who are scheduled to make a formal announcement in Monaco tomorrow, 29th local time. https://www.sail-world.com/news/212574

    Unusual Tri

At least someone is tinkering and will hopefully learn something from the experience without breaking the bank... not enough of that these days. Some mistakes are obvious to some of us without having to make them. Others have to make them to get the message.
  13. Short video review from ETNZ...
  14. You think that's extreme? Hold my beer.. A Council organization sponsoring a professionally managed keelboat fleet for wealthy Aucklanders is probably consistent with Council running and subsidising an Uber-style ridesharing service for the hard-luck down-and-outs of...wait for it... Devonport. https://www.stuff.co.nz/auckland/108856109/why-are-the-poor-paying-for-a-councilowned-uber-for-the-wealthy

    Unusual Tri

Any guesses as to what it was?
  16. Yep, why is "keelboat crew" considered the logical progression and not something maybe a little more like this... https://youtu.be/0EnTIVFAVJE?t=195
  17. In some ways services have got worse... I lived on my boat at WH at one point for a couple of months. Today liveaboards are not permitted, ostensibly because the marina doesn't have adequate toilet facilities.
  18. And why are ratepayer funds being used to sponsor the MRX fleet, as opposed to say Piedy's, E5.9's, F1020's, Y88's, M class, Mullets...??? And why are ratepayers not listed with the other sponsors on the MRX website??

  20. Seems like a cool idea... https://www.facebook.com/royalprincealfredyachtclub/photos/a.184271012963/10156794141682964/?type=3&__tn__=-R
  21. Yep, my best guess is that he's actually a cyborg. 9 of his 13 world championships have been in the A class.
  22. Final results ahead of the Worlds starting on Saturday - https://www.mysailingclub.com.au/DisplayResults/DisplayPublicSeriesResults?Id=330&Id2=2018%20A-Cat%20Australians Glenn Ashby continues to crush the competition - netting 6 points from 7 races. Peter Burling 2nd and Blair Tuke 8th. A good sprinkling of other Kiwis further back. BTW I can't help noticing... for all the talk about the Olympic mixed multihull bringing more women into the sport, here in one of the strongest grass-roots classes there are 2 women in a fleet of 60, next week for the Worlds it will be 3 of 64 in the o
  23. Interesting. Seems a little surprising given recent trends. Wonder how NZL's Jan Dawson voted. Also interesting that the Laser is not locked down as the one-person dinghy. Perhaps a bit long in the tooth?
  24. Hope you didn't think I was suggesting otherwise B00B00. Just pointing out that what might be intended as "support" isn't necessarily the thing that gives kids the 'bug' and in some cases may actually work against it, as well as potentially turning some other families off the scene altogether.
