  1. I have been checking out coppercoat (thanks Fish) and the $$$$ side of it seems to stack up.
  2. Agree with IT, get in as much sailing time as you can, ideally do an offshore passage with some one else first.
  3. Just got confirmation from Westhaven I have a park for the night so BP is in. (note to handicapper - it's a big slow old schooner that sails like a real dog).
  4. Actually when I read it I agreed with a lot of what he wrote. I wonder how some people manage to fall off so readily. In over 50 years and over 100,000 miles I have never fallen off, nor been on a boat where someone has fallen off. Go figure.
  5. So they got off because it was a cutter not a ketch- wonder what Scott Watson thinks of that?
  6. Our distant cousins are daily becoming more distant.
  7. Or simply repaint the entire boot tripe with a different colour anti foul
  8. I always think the chances of simply falling off are lower when you are working the deck in obviously bad weather. It's hard not to be aware of where you are and what is going on.
  9. What does winning look like for you? Think I'm in with a chance?
  10. BTW, were I sailing regularly in cold water I would choose a float coat as worn in the PNW over the "standard" lifejacket by a country mile.
  11. If I was sailing a 49er I would wear a lifejacket, and maybe a helmet if it were warranted (never sailed a 49er so don't know). But on my boat I have never worn one, possibly never will. I do not consider myself unsafe. Just sensible.
  12. Knowing I was sailing in cold water would affect my decision whether or not to tell the crew to don a lifejacket. No need for a law. Also I think the stats are misleading. If you break them down you'll see that drownings off sailboats over (i think ) 25 ft are pretty rare.

  14. I have them on board, I'll never stop someone wearing one, I expect someone to wear one if I tell them to (I am the skipper). What else is necessary?
  15. I had a look at those links, how far can you throw a stanchion? 12. Please tie a rope to a stanchion and throw it as far as you can.
  16. Sometime next month I will be sailing Opua to Whangaparaoa, I'd consider it.
  17. Just got the forms for my new registration- $80.
  18. Yo intiendo pero hablar es un poquito mas dificile. Mi espousa es de La Republica Dominicana. OK - for that trip no skippers qualification is necessary. If the boat is NZ registered then you would need Cat 1 clearance (you can find the rules on the YNZ website), if registered elsewhere you won't need cat 1 but it is a useful tool/checklist for getting a boat prepared.Technically should have a license for the VHF radio and a you will have to make a decision on what long range communications you want to carry (SSB means another license as does Ham radio, but a satphone no problem). 19. Don't think an International certificate of competency is required for most places around here, thought that was mostly around Europe? ( don't have one and have sailed to around 30 countries to date.)
  20. Hola Before we start we are you leaving from and where do you wish to visit?
