  1. Yup they are a bit of a" bed and bucket "but it sure can crack along. I am drawn to the concept more than say a Farrier which costs a whole bunch more. The mooring conundrum in a way constrains the local coastal sailboat fleet from expanding its design options which is kinda becoming bland and boring.
  2. "We have enjoyed seeing our progress generally track upwards each year." Yup, berthage rates are certainly tracking upwards each year. Does the marina management have a "ceiling figure for the future cost of marina berthing rates or will they just continue tracking upwards. At some point soon if not now many bertholders will just bail from boat ownership based on this factor plus they have already incurred the drive down value of their craft due to the costs of forever rising berthage rates. I could bang on endlessly about the much overlooked fact that Westhaven is in effect a publ
  3. Wahine weather. Kinda spooky.
  4. Crickey that’s a breeze. Wouldn’t want to be in a plane tonite.
  5. Lovely little tri. Deceased estate sale in Oz. http://dicknewickboats.com/echo38/index.html
  6. Jesus things are getty pretty ruff at Westhaven if you gotta grind on the loading dock.
  7. Surely it is a pretty achievable task to remove the nasties. Maybe they could employ Happy Teeth to assist. My concerns are lack of vehicle parking, poor water quality and also the ever rising costs of berthage rates. Seems as if the BEU model is a dead duck and Westhaven will just look to rental return. Not a major but annually ratcheting the berthage rentals on the premise that there is increased expenditure does not wash.
  8. I remember the 1977- 1978 Whitbred fleet parked up at Marsden wharf and the Auckland start. Watching Brunel shot from a drone fanging it in the Southern ocean reminds me that we have come a long way since those days. 40 years in fact.
  9. Jesus, picky lot aren't you. They do a single fin as well. I would be interested too in how the bilgey gets along but given the coast generally does not suffer from depth issues a centre board would not be high on my list. Seriously what are the options for 10m or less new boat. Local market has lots of Youngs Townsons Wrights Davidsons etc that are all getting a bit long in the tooth and you can in my book pass up the Duffers Hansoff Varias and Bendy Boys at this or any other size.
  10. Fullscreen bloody awesome. https://www.facebook.com/volvooceanrace/videos/10156782042082437/
  11. The RM 890 ticks a lot of boxes. Fits on a 10m marina, has a tiller and the mainsheet traveller is properly located. Performance looks good and would make a capable little cruiser with ample storage and livable space. Now at circa $200k used what else is out there. http://no-frills-sailing.com/at-rm-yachts-of-la-rochelle/
  12. The humble bilge keeler has come a long way in my view. I really like the RM range of plywood or if you like timber cored yachts. No cradle required https://youtu.be/PT0UNacX_9c

  14. The Yankee Wharf ramp is a bloody low tide disaster. Watched some poor bugger go arse up on the weekend and he was very lucky to avoid serious injury. While I am having a rant what is it with all the asbestos littering the old mine base and the abandoned steel cables and debris on the foreshore. http://www.tim.co.nz/hbtour/#node70

Humdinger of a race going on. https://www.volvooceanrace.com/static/assets/virtualeye/volvobabylon/
  16. I suppose all the public submissions made to Council now become redundant. https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/other-sports/102672658/team-nz-remain-waterfront-nomads-under-new-americas-cup-base-plan
  17. Getting hard to have that experience on the water these days. I scuttle off in my princess alone every now and then for what I term mental health days and just lie in my cockpit or berth and read about great sea battles and adventures. Part of the aging process I suppose along with becoming a avid bird watcher.
  18. In that sort of water temperature you will not last long regardless of what you are wearing and how much identifying locator technology you have. Simply put the yacht has sailed a significant distance away from you in a raging sea. Could actually be miles before the crew accomplished a reverse course and a horrendous beat to wind and sea to return. I know somebody that parted company with their yacht in similar conditions in a similar part of the ocean. Wife and daughter wacked the boat into reverse with the motor and reversed down large seas to successfully pluck hubby from the sea. Luck
  19. Yup it's one of those I know what this feels like pics. She is listed on trademe and I would not be surprised if the hull is full length kauri planks.
  20. Bugger "After seven hours the search has been called off - Officially lost at sea"
  21. "This is grim. Quite affected by this imagine seeing your boat sailing away from you in those seas" Stuff of your worst nightmare. New a Chinese guy that got lost overboard north of Fiji off a kiwi built alloy Elliott and his partner came up on deck after a spell below to find only the bucket and shampoo. If memory serves me correctly she later sailed with Keith Levey on Sofia which got hit by the weather bomb that claimed the Quartermaster.
