  1. Possibly, if your attention to detail is so poor you don't know what day it is, you are missing some of the really exciting aspects of what is going on? The start period and first leg is fascinating, and it is the slightest detail that makes all the difference. Think it was Francesco that said 2 or 3 seconds timing in a maneuver is all it takes to completely change the situation. Sounds like a pile of Gen Y-ers around here, wanting easy action served up in their lap. And for anyone watching the TVNZ coverage, shoot yourself now, they have targeted that at Women's Day level. 2. Never waste a good crisis. You guys are looking at this in terms of the capital cost of a new boat. Look at this in the eyes of a professional fund raiser. A full blown fundraising campaign. Like with any capex request in a large and cumbersome organisation, you chuck on all the things you would like, that you are never going to get, unless you tag them on to a much larger project, so they get lost in the noise. That, and I wouldn't be surprise if the professional fundraisers have their own layer of cost. Sure they add more value than they cost, but you can't replace a CG boat w
  3. They never said they were coming to NZ for a major refit. That is just a rumour, that was repeated by the Herald. No doubt put about by someone with vested interests. All the skipper would say was he had a few life jackets and rafts to service. You don't keep 20 something crew on if you are going through a major refit...
  4. You may be right KM, but I would also think that the likes of Grant Robertson are politically astute enough to know that money talks. If there is sufficient revenue from these boats, I would have thought things would be easier to get them in. I note the skipper of this boat was very very cagey about how much they would spend. He only mentioned getting a few life jackets and life rafts serviced. I know life rafts cost a fortune to service these days, but not $3/4 mil, as 'rumoured' by the Herald. Now, don't get me wrong, I think there is a clear economic benefit to you guys for letting the
  5. I'd probably rate any no name on twitter higher than the Herald, but then again, I'm a bit weird, I think Mike Hoskin is a w^&#$@r, an all.

    Weighing a dinghy

To answer your original question, I have weighed dinghies of this weight with bathroom scales, one end at a time. Its important to keep the whole thing level (sitting flat on the scales at one end, and on a block of wood at the other). It is far easier doing it with two people. But if the dinghy is held off the ground at two points, the force at each point added together will equal the weight. Its not super accurate, like for class weight compliance for racing dinghies, but it will tell you how heavy your dink is for hauling up a beach etc.
  7. Maybe so, but if you are pushing dirt around with a dozzer, esp near water courses, you'd do well to have your arse covered with some paper work of some sort. Either that or don't mention it to anyone, like on the interweb and stuff. Even if it is a permitted activity, you can get a certificate of compliance so no one gets their tits in a tangle. KDC are the all time world record holder for beauracratic fuckery, make NDC, and even Auckland Council look like rank amateurs.
  8. If you eye ball that area between your marked rocks, you will see the whole area is foul ground really. Just give it a wide berth. Waikalabubu Bay itself is fine, its the rocky area around the point. I don't think this rock was 'unchartered' as such. But in saying that, in areas of foul ground, like around rocking points, not every little lump and pointy bit is chartered. It is the difference between pilotage (looking at where you are) and relying on electronics for navigation. At 2 and 5 m contours, a chart plotter always makes things look cleaner than they are. Always sobering to look a
  9. Good work KM. You must have done well to get an, er, resource consent out of Northland Regional Council so quickly...
  10. That is very profound KM. I'm sure if the scale of the project required, it would be possible to rustle up the required kauri. For the odd job on our kauri log we have used (I think) macrocarpa with a lot of everdure style epoxy penetrating resin, or lumps of teak. Either way, the jobs we have done have been heavily encased in epoxies, so they are far closer to the composite spectrum than classic wood, and the rot resistant attributes are dealt with by the epoxy and not the traits of the wood. A bulldozer? I'm not sure how to say this KM, but unless you are getting into earth-moving
  11. No, that's not quite right. I see ROI for sailing in the ratio of time fixing / repairing to sailing / chilling out in the environment. The primary thing for me is time, and money forms a proxy for time. I need money so I have the time to go sailing, but I need to spend my time working, to make the money, but because I'm working, I don't have the time to go sailing... Heritage protection is a different angle altogether. And if this were a classic, yes definitely. But its not. One element would be the quality kauri planking. You can't get that anymore. KM, are you looking for a new pr
  12. I think the question you need to be asking yourself KM, is if the wife traded you in for a younger model, would you spend considerable time and effort trying to attract her back to the old and worn-out you, or would you cut your losses, go off and get yourself a younger and fresher model? Same sage advice from you saying it is a 'bit of a project'. As you well know, there is a substantial risk those projects never get re-launched. Banter aside, I wouldn't have thought the work and time would not justify the end result and value. Trademe is not short of project boats of that age and s
  13. Navy sent to fix the EQ and Tsunami monitoring gear at Raoul Is. It is good to see the Navy do something useful. They are more often than not anchored up in Stanmore Bay... “The two tsunami gauges located on Raoul will give us information about any tsunami caused by an earthquake and act as an early warning system.” The crews will carry out any critical repairs on the GNS equipment and attempt to improve power systems. https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/nz-earthquake/300248124/navy-ship-heads-to-remote-raoul-island-to-check-tsunami-warning-systems
  14. It didn't even occur to me that someone would restore / rebuild it. What is it, a 35 / 40 yr old wooden boat that has had extensive structural damage, and a good soaking in salt water. The reality is its a dated design now, well used. And there is no shortage of alternatives to buy that haven't had the keel ripped off. Not to mention you'd need to go find and recover the keel. Based on a recent thread around the cost of pouring a new keel. My guess is it is trash, but it will be interesting to see what transpires. Maybe that dodgy TM guy will buy it, superglue the hull back together
  15. Given the selection of quality boats currently going for $1 reserve on trade me, what is the consensus this one is worth? I'm not seeing much worth salvaging on it. Small engine, low hours, but a solid submersion in salt water. If I we doing an engine upgrade, the cost of install outweighs the benefit of shagging around with a 10 year old engine thats been in salt water. What is left, a rig? sails aren't new. Cost to break up and dump hull outweighs possible value of anything else.
  16. That stern extension looks like a crime against naval architecture.
  17. I could definitely see you as deck cargo. Sitting there in a deck chair, beach umbrella and an ice cream in hand, amongst the shipping containers.
  18. I wish you'd stop giving the guy oxygen. The media is constantly giving this guy oxygen. That is what he craves. Just ignore him, confine him to the irrelevance of history.
  19. you need to lay off your special source AA, you are in danger of coming out with some quality conspiracy theories... How many major, damaging quakes did John Key deal with? They put the fear of god into large parts of the population.

    Boat Names

What is the apparent wrongness of Dr Zeuss? That is far too woke for me to understand why that would be banned?

Ah, the thought police are back.
  22. You are most likely write, but I'm not seeing any need for L3 now. There are a few restaurants and cafes that could do with opening between now and Sunday morning, oh, and some retail shops etc... possibly need another thread.
  23. Tsunami threat for Auckland just been lifted - still got the car alarm warning on my phone, they could do with changing the ring tone for downgrade alarms...
