Capillary ? Not sure if that is the right phenomena though, the type of water ingress is likely to be due to differential pressure.

    Water in bilge

If the stuffing box is dry (as in no grease), it can come in while sailing, but will also come in while on your berth, with all the seacocks closed. You'll get most volume when you first arrive at the boat. If its only coming in when your seacocks are open, i.e. not dependent on sailing or motoring, then I would go looking for a welsh onion on a system attached to a seacock. if you've recently had issues and done work on the raw water system, that would be a target rich place to start looking. From a risk point of view, a stuffing box wont fail catastrophically, i.e. let go and let water po
  3. I don't think so, not fairly. Definitely not if you take your racing seriously. For club level racing, it may be possible to get reasonable alignment on handicaps based solely on performance, but any minor changes in either conditions or skill of the multihull and their speed can increase in far greater proportion to the corresponding increase in skill from a mono hull.

What sort of shaft seal do you have? Sounds like it's a conventional stuffing box. Needs a pump of grease after you've been motoring. If it needs a pump regularly, I.e. There is water in the bilge every time you've motored somewhere, then probably needs the stuffing re stuffed. There is a thread recently about it. The stuffing is like a hemp / flax rope, coiled into the stuffing box and pumped full of axle grease. If you have poor shaft alignment or vibration while motoring it can also let more water in while motoring (vibration making a gap while the shaft spins). If you know what you ar
  5. Haha Wheels, if your hoping the price of copper based antifouls will drop, surely the price of cheese, butter and yoghurt would have halved by know, along with the dairy payout for milk solids? Thanks for the link. It does confirm cc doesn't need an annual burnish, but does confirm why people talk about burnishing it. We've had cc now for a couple of years and haven't burnished yet, so I guess if the performance drops off Ill have to give it a rub. I believe the key innovation with cc is that the resin very slowly ablates in the water, in combination with the copper oxidising, allowing
  6. Hi Chippie, Copper coat is definitely not applied by spray, it's rollered, so I would say it is a substantially different product. A heavy and thick two pot expoxy that is rollered on in multiple layers, tacky on tacky. Wheels, I don't understand your point, sponging / wiping or otherwise cleaning coppercoat is no different to how you would clean your hull with any other antifoul, so size shouldn't be relevant. I am assuming you don't clean your hull and just periodically haul out for a new application of AF? And you definitely don't sand copper coat. There has been talk of burnishing
  7. Out of interest Waikiore, how fast do you need to motor to get everything off before a race? I have been interested in 'cleaning the boat by sailing' for some time, but was developing the understanding only power boats could really develop enough speed to get the hull clean that way.
  8. Sorry Wheels, you don't need to haul out with Copper Coat, that is the whole point of it. You can dry out on pile and waterblast, broom off, or dive or snorkel. We haven't burnished our CC, the CC literature doesn't appear to mention the need for burnishing, but you don't need to haul out to do that either. In the context of racing, yes it would need a clean before a big race. I used to do that with my International anitfoul, but cleaning it every other month meant the AF had a short life before requiring a re-coat. CC being hard, you can go to town on the cleaning, both intensity and frequen
  9. Its an apt that's been automatically installed during the latest update. You obviously agreed to the terms and conditions at some stage, most likely when you signed something at the bank. Every time your boat costs you $100, it gives a little series of beeps. If its going off every 15 minutes it means you need to go back to the bank.....
  10. Are Ports of Auckland sponsoring them this year? Big shame for the volunteers, but I would actually stop and think twice before supporting an event sponsored by POAL.
  11. Hay Rehab, Are you responding to IT or me? Your post does not make sense. Now your talking about aids and screwing the captains wife. We're just talking about DSC and AIS.....
  12. One example Rehab. And you didn't say what the weather conditions were. I am already aware of the details of that incident via a person on the boat, and it certainly wasn't a storm at sea. Likewise, I can go and find any number of news or coroners reports of guys going overboard at anchor in sheltered bays etc. While the incident you site was underway, it started off in calm and benign conditions.
  13. Now Rehab, fairs fair, I answered your question in VHF tickets, now you answer my question on programming the numbers into a DSC unit. Do you know the MMSI number for your boat and how to program it into the DVD player, vhf or other appropriate electronic device that sitsin the corner?
  14. Good post Rigger, makes me want to go and investigate this AIS a bit more. I believe most MOB's occur at anchor or in the marina, generally involve alcohol, peeing and or getting into or out of a dinghy, not during rough weather.
  15. Most people are competent enough to turn their VHF on before issuing a Mayday.... And yes, myself and the other adults on my boat have VHF tickets and just about every other ticket known to man, ranging from day skipper to Ocean Yacht master and sea survival etc, not exactly sure what point that proves though. As I mentioned earlier, I use my phone to call Coastguard, its private, quieter and much more efficient. Everyone already has one or more phones, already know how to use them and don't need a licence to use them. Do you know your vessels MMSI number and know how to programme it i
  16. So your confirming you believe VHF's aren't normally on. That supports and verifies my argument that DSC will not work, because the VHF needs to be on for it work work. Doh!
  17. DSC doesn't work, it makes everyone turn off their VHF's, so they can't hear voice messages either and legit voice mayday calls. the frequency of false alarms and the inability to silence them is a fundamental problem of the system. That is the difference between theory and reality. Fact. That is reality based on experience Rehad. My opinion only, but none the less reality based on experience in one of the worlds busiest waterways, the Solent. And I don't see what is wrong with existing comms systems, two forms of communication, a phone and a VHF. Every time I've needed assistance
  18. Hi Rehad, Is there any chance you could post a summary of your last post? Its too long to read. I don't feel I can contribute meaningfully to the thread if I haven't read the last post, and it would be a shame to let such an important topic fizzle out due to the lack of a summary of a post...
  19. Agree with Rigger, when sailing around the Solent (UK) the number of false DSC alarms was crazy. They are like car alarms, seriously noisy, invasive and completely pointless. You'd be lucky to get one genuine alarm out of a thousand. Most people would turn the VHF off completely to not get the false alarms, doesn't matter if you were on ch 16 or not, they override everything, and can only be silenced by the sender, major pain in the arse.

    Sound Proofing

Thanks Wheels, Our injector pump is a Bosch unit circa 30 years old (as is the engine), and I would assume inline due to its shape. The injectors and tappets are on the list to do, but a wee way down the list after more pressing priorities. I'm hoping the injectors will be the final nice little refinement at the end of the project. So far we have dealt with vibration be replacing very old engine mounts and the drive damper plate. That deals with the torsional vibration from the engine / prop shaft. While we were doing that we also identified a broken engine bracket, which clearly would n

    Sound Proofing

The biggest single improvement we made to engine noise was fitting a silencer on the air intake (air filter). This removed the deep boom boom caused by the pistons drawing air in. This is the deep low frequency noise that really sounds like a bad hangover headache. Being low frequency, all of the soundproofing materials are least effective at this frequency. Now I can hear all of the other noises like noisy tappets and piston slap etc etc, but the sound proofing will take care of that... I got the silencer from the Beta Engine suppliers, the Engine Room. They were good, and sponsor th

    Sound Proofing

I'm fitting a blower fan and ducting via a baffle box. Fairly easy to determine the air consumption requirement of the engine, either from first principles, or google search, then basically double it for cooling and ventilation requirements. My 37 hp Izuzu 3 cylinder requires about 30 l/s. The cheapest Burnsco blower, 3 inch, wont do less than about 100 l/s, so its an easy set up. I'm using the wavebar, which is a heavy metal impregnated vinyl, to seal up all of the little gaps and corners in the engine box. its 4 mm thick, so good for making gaskets and flange type thingies for pipes and

I recently got a job lot of sorber-barrier (foam with a sound barrier and de-coupling layer) and a roll of wavebar directly from Pyrotek. Haven't finished installing it yet so can't say how effective it is. Forman Insulation are Pyrotek's retailer. Also got topshelf cushy float engine mounts from Hancook industries. They were good to deal with, the guy there used to have a Supertanker 34 http://www.hancock.net.nz/
  24. Reports now from the Herald that all on board have been rescued, being 53 passengers and 7 crew. So that is good. No reports yet of any injuries. Police now in charge.
  25. White Island Tour boat on fire, police report 30 to 40 people on board, stuff.co.nz report 56 people on board. Fire well involved based on the photo in the Herald article. Mayday issued at 3:45 pm live webcame available (which is crazy in itself). Really hope it doesn't end badly. http://www.coastguardwhakatane.co.nz/whakatane-harbour-cam http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11575754
