  1. I am trans ocean Reg and have enquired with nz customs, plus have talked to other nzers who have left with TO Reg no problems apparently. There are thousands of boats sailing worldwide using it to clear in and out of everywhere. Hopefully I will leave later this year for Fiji, no problem returning asNZ customs records the fact that you left in a nz boat although not NZ registered, and will not try to charge duty etc on returning
  2. Trans ocean a German association works and is easy and cheap no surveys needed and you can still fly your own country flag.
  3. Looks like norsands in Whangarei?
  4. If what you are doing looks strong and feels strong once sailing then all is good
  5. I thought the best way is to drill oversized holes for screws and then fil with epoxy allow to harden and then drill smaller holes for the screws so that there’s an epoxy layer between the screws and the timber and the timber stays dry
  6. I have pulled out pieces of rotten kauri before I would rather use some h4 treated pine with epoxy I have heard that epoxy doesn’t stick as well to the tanalised timber but have never had a problem with it.
  7. I tried that buying from someone on trademe an adjustment to my vhf radio to be able to receive ais onto a laptop but I was never able to make it work which was probably operator error. But have now bought a matsutec stand alone unit which was not that much more is simple to use and sends and receives. Wouldn’t argue if ais was required for clearance to sail offshore.
  8. Go on then I am sure it will be worthwhile
  9. And you can sail without cat one which means you can make all your own decisions about what you will carry which is what all the non nz boats that leave nz and return to the islands do.
  10. My wharram cat has 2 full bulkheads in each Hull which may assist in isolating any leaks. The disadvantage is having 2 isolated smaller cabins instead of one larger space. All about compromise but the perfect boat could be the one you already have until the next one arrives. A fire you can’t control will mean having to abandon ship in a hurry so some sort of raft or alternative will still be needed.
  11. Could be done with bps boat being timber. If you can fit in enough positive flotation to overcome the negative and keep it balanced so the boat will stay level. If you know how many sheets of ply were used in construction and the weight of ballast plus motor mast etc you could estimate how many cubic meters of air or polystyrene etc you would need. Or just start again with a multi Hull.
  12. Got to admit I am a. Bit confused about the sudden topic change Kevin is there a reason or is just randomly inserted into the thread
  13. Bps lanolin on the prop sounds good but I like having outboards that are out of the water when not in use.
  14. I was at tiri one night and a pod of dolphins were in the bay all night and still there in the morning probably chasing rays
  15. Best anchor I have had was a 20 kg unbranded bugel anchor never failed once.
  16. Well apart from the consequences of being caught there’s also the fact that immigration will have recorded you leaving nz at the airport so when you show up via ird etc as being back but no record of entry. It is easier to just follow the rules.
  17. The crew of the rose noelle survived well without a raft although they did not seem to have a viable tender, and there best option was to stay with the boat.
  18. You don’t need cat one to leave Australia unless you are racing. For cruising it is skippers responsibility have what is needed without being inspected.
  19. Yes got one of those already
  20. With a multi hull you should only have to abandon ship if it’s on fire and you can’t stop it so firefighting gear is important. Another piece of kit that could be useful is a small size bright colour kite similar to a kitesurfing kite but smaller. This can give propulsion and visibility as it will sit 30 metres up in any thing over about 8 knots of wind.
  21. We bought a cat in Australia and sailed it here from Bundaberg in September really easy trip other than last 2 days. Should not have to pay duty etc if you can prove it was built here.
  22. Yep liferafts are like skyrockets unpack them and wonder if it’s going to work a good size inflatable hard bottom with some extra s that is already pumped up would give me a better feeling of security and the possibility of getting somewhere
  23. You could build a plywood cat with fat hulls and a tramp that could fit on deck. Then you could sail yourself to safety if necessary as well as using it as a tender with an outboard oars or sailing.
  24. People have made dinghys that have passed as rafts under cat 1. I think the guy from the catamaran flying carpet Bernard Rhodes? Did one that would be more useful and longer lasting than a raft.
