  3. The railblazer mounts look good, would fit well where we currently have an old gps
  4. If it’s going to be outside it’ll need to be protected from spray and rain. My boat is a launch so my setup just uses an ordinary iPad. I love Navionics. It syncs with my iPhone so you can create routes on one device and they appear on the other. Any old iPad will do the trick though as mentioned by Zozza above it must be a wifi+cellular model. It chews through the battery so you need to have a plug nearby for charging. I have mine mounted on this bracket - see pic …
  5. Yup it's criminal the way exorbitant berth rates have slayed the value of moored craft. Those who own or manage marinas should hang their heads in collective shame and a plague on all their houses I say. We have been without a yacht for 3 years now and looking at the costs of ownership in today's terms we could no longer justify the outgoings. I have reached for a sail and oar alternative the LOA is far more compatible with my retirement income.
  6. If I was going to go that way I'd get a proper industrial ruggedised tablet. Yes, they are about twice the price of a mid-range brand name device, but they generally have better, brighter screens for daylight use, and they come already IP67 or better waterproof and somewhat bounceproof. This sort of thing https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/marketplace/computers/tablets-e-book-readers/tablets/listing/4623710434
  7. Did a trip to Fiji, cruised there then home via New Cal using only tablets with Navionics and Predictwind (with a back up laptop with Open CPN) There was an Apple IPad and a Samsung tablet. Both worked really well, with the following caveats: I found the Samsung easier to use but I have android phone so it was probably a familiarity thing than performance. We had repeated headaches trying to download weather routing/gribs, using Iridium go and the Samsung. But the Apple unit just seemed to 'get along better' with the Iridium. It got so bad that a departing crew in Noumea left me
  8. Any 64gb Android will do the job, but I have found this couple give a very good run down of pros and cons, and cost v effectiveness... https://sailingkerguelen.com/en/best-gps-tablet-navigation-android-apple/ Edit: If you decided to go IOS over Android, pay careful attention to the difference between Apple wifi v cellular. You always want the cellular option if you are prepared to pay the Apple premium, because they have GPS, and Wifi only models don't. Android models (as far as I am aware) all have built in GPS whether it is cellular capable or not. BTW, I use the term GPS
  9. Hi, going to get a basic tablet for navionics, phone has been great but thinking bigger screen and something I can leave on board would be good. Anyone had a good experience that could steer me in right direction would be much appreciated. Cheers
  10. Nice morning for it…. good angle, too
  11. That's three options now - who knew! thanks very much lads.
  12. LP plastics will custom make these in small quantities, great service
  13. Definitely a sad day for the city as well. The port was hanging on a bit as the 105miles up the Chesapeake added a lot of cost to carriers. This could be the death knell. Over the years we sailed under that bridge many times, Also Wed night racing the harbour side for about a dozen years. It is a busy port and always fun. Was often cat and mouse with the ship movements and interesting to see if anyone got an immediate disqualification from5 honks -and it did happen
  14. If you want to drive north of the Brynderwyns then Rob Harrop at RH Engineering on Port Rd in Whangarei has made me all sorts of custom pieces out of custom materials and at a good price.
  15. With Westhaven pricing ever going north, your new ship is looking v attractive to me.
  16. I'm told everything big under the bridge has two tugs. Obviously not guaranteed but a lot more redundancy at least.
  17. Yesterday
  18. Almost did in January with two tugs fighting hard to control a ship in strong Westerly , took her to Chelsea -then back down the Harbour when the wind died to the Port.
  19. We used Henley's to make rudder bearings out of some fancy plastic material. At that time we were doing a new drive shaft, shaft seal and all sorts of expensive and tedious boat stuff with them as well. There was a little bit of wear on my rudder stock so ended up putting the whole thing in the car and taking it down there for them to measure so they could get the fit just right. If you need it bespoke you'll have to get something machined up, which would be either Henley's of Chatfields. I found Henley's easier to deal with but that doesn't mean either is any better for you.
  20. Learnt something too Didn't know ships have a black box.
  21. Yep! mind you it took me 12h to get here from home. It’s like living in Auckland and keeping a boat in Welly!
  22. The reality of any long weekend in Auckland. Glad to see it's global!
  23. Those noodles do a great job of protecting the dad bod from abrading.
