Vessel sunk

Recommended Posts

Anyone know anything about a sunken vessel in Okahu Bay just off the sea wall at Kelly Taltons? Saw it at high tide tonight but looked like an upturned hull.

Tried to photograph it but it's a bit hard to drive, txt, drink beer and eat crisps while taking photos!

from the old aerial pics on gis moorings viewer

seems it could be the big wharram cat "twice as nice"

or as the pic shows it closer to the beach than the yellow tri manu puru

hmmm....

the HM was talking of sending all the Okahu mooring owners a letter 6 months ago, after the situation had been clarified

but i haven't received a letter yet

and afaik the 22? challenges to the unitary plan have not been dealt with by the courts? yet

so the plan is still not "implemented"

but have heard that okahu owners who's 3 year moorings now need reinspection

are being told it can't be done as we all have to go

Down on the ramp at Okahu Bay yesterday morning a  bit of a sad old sight - big Wharram getting carved into bite sized pieces with a recip saw and chucked into a bin.  Boat was probably past practicable restoration (obvious extensive rot in cross members for instance).  Just a boat, and one that has been left way too long without effective maintenance, but the end of someone's dreams, and a pretty stark "full stop" marking the end of a cruising boat.  Might be quite a regular sight soon I'd say looking at the condition of some of the mussel farms moored out in the bay.

apparently a new mooring position that was not well  chosen - set for the 47' wharram

as at low tide the swells generated by the recent big winds

slammed the boat on the sea bed long enough to break beams

Hmm pretty sure we saw Enda's boat on the hard on the far east of the port area -- reclamation area near the coal yard -- last Sunday. Heard he was leaving it here 'til a potential continuation next season?
