Guest
Just got back from the prize giving. Typing will be dodgy because of the rum consumed. Sailors happy after a difficult day's sailing. All I spoke to were happy with the regatta and the party on the island. Some sore heads this morning. Well done every one.
PaulR 3
I think the concept of having a harbour race to get all the boats to a suitable area for 2 x W/L races and another harbour race to get the boats back afterwards is a very VERY good concept. I enjoyed my racing. Suggestions for Next Year's Sailing Instructions: 1). ADD in the starting ORDER of divisions. 2). Give all the courses a UNIQUE number, rather than have several No 1 courses, several number 2 courses and so on. That way Course 3 may be used as the harbour race but layer that afternoon or the next morning Course 13 or 23 could be used. IMHO this would save a lot of messing about checking whether the day was correct and wether it was the afternoon or morning sheet one was having to read. 3). ADD in any other special events that happen at the same time. This is the 4th(?) BMW but it was the 90th Lipton Cup. Combine and work together rather than alienate. 4). List some / most of the prizes. In the Coastal Classic, entry costing about the same all up, there is an outboard motor + other great stuff. I'm pretty sure the SIMRAD had an overseas holiday, but as I did NOT win it yet!, I can be sure. 5). The Olympic Course was great sailing in the 1/4 Ton Cup held by Panmure a fortnight before. Perhaps having an option of W/L or Olympic courses for variety. BBYC Friday. A BIG "WELL DONE" for the lady Race Officer who abandoned one race and reset the course after a big wind shift. Guest
We had a good 3 days of racing in B division. Conditions were challenging but it was fun - as racing always is. We believe that both yachtclubs made a great effort to create an enjoyable 3 day Auckland racing event. Reading this thread shows me that there is a gap between the expectations of numerous "racers" and the way that the clubs want to place this regatta amongst us. I suppose its always the same old question: "How much do you have to give - to get"? A: In the current world obviously you have to give a bit more - but hey- we live in a commercial world - short of corporate sponsors. My recommendation - cut down on the blatantly "loud promo stuff" and give racing a higher profile throughout ( "hard sale" does not work in the competitive racing world). It was a fun event, well organized thanks to Squaddie and Bucks and BMW sponsorship..
Guest
When I was told that we would be racing 40 footers, Elliott 7's. MRX's, Melges 24 with Olympic dingy sailors and a few other randoms including a R930, with a little 1/4 tonner Crac-A-Jac, I thought we would just keep getting nailed at the start and as the big boats staring just after us sailing through us and dumping on us every time they could. I assumed that we were in for a shocker. However, I was wrong. We kept away from the caravans, 88's and 1020's, (got a black flag on one of the 88's when they barged us at the bottom mark), we picked the side that we liked and got to the top mark ahead of a lot of bigger boats. had a great result and collected some booty. Thanks BMW, Mount Gay, Bucks and Squadron, had a great regatta. http://www.bmwaucklandregatta.co.nz/Regatta+Information/Series+Results.html
