For the second year running, I am certain that the weather didn't help.

This. I wouldn't read too much into very few people going out with a 35 knot forecast.

Yep. We were all entered and looking forward to the Mahurangi to Auckland race as part of our Bay Week return.

But with the Friday afternoon forecast predicting 36knots on the nose for the Monday we left Russell Friday and decided to sail through.

That's two years in a row for us. Hopefully next year will be better.

Is it just me, or does it feel like the traditional yachtie Christmas / January Holidays period has been mostly sh*t sailing weather for the last half decade or more?  I am thinking we should all take our sailing holidays from around Waitangi day, but of course if you have kids that's no good as they'll be back at school...

its a lottery that is looking RIGGED! Christmas to the 1st week in January is unpredictable i.e how often do we get an easterly blow, endless wind or rain when its supposed to be summer, it seems we always end up sheltering from bad weather for days if not a week at a time and its not that pleasant! The settled weather starts about now, I would support a petition to move the summer break forwards a few weeks at least.

Hell no!

Then everyone would be out there in February and March when the weather is best and I'm out there.  Leave as is so our anchorages aren't crowded.

1840

1840 (painted in 1862)

The first Auckland Regatta was held on the day the city was founded, 18 September 1840, the day that Captain Hobson's officials raised the flag and 11 years before the first America's Cup contest was sailed in 1851.

That first regatta on the Waitemata Harbour was an impromptu three-race event that took place after representatives of Lieutenant Governor William Hobson rowed ashore from the barque Anna Watson and took formal possession of the site in the name of Queen Victoria.

A report in The New Zealand Advertiser and Bay of Islands Gazette of 24 September 1840 said the official party rowed back to the Anna Watson and then: “After partaking of luncheon, a regatta took place between a five-oared gig belonging to the Surveyor-General and a six-oared gig belonging to the Anna Watson, both pulled excellent style by amateurs. This was followed by a match for a purse of five pounds between two whale-boats pulled by sailors, and by another between two large canoes paddled by natives.”
