Inboard 10 HP Diesel Kaput !

Hi all

 

Just looking for some wisdom. The 10 Hp Bukh in my Raven 26 has given up the ghost after nursing it for seven or eight years. I would  love to replace it with something close to like for like but obviously with the present value of a Raven, unless I can find something second hand for a reasonable price, options are fairly limited as I don't want to be sinking 10 k into a new motor. Second hand small diesels seem to be as rare as rocking horse poop.

 

I guess the other option is an outboard? Has anyone done anything similar to a similar sized yacht? Certainly not the preferred option but needs must I guess.

 

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Initial diagnosis is that it is a lot deeper than that with (probable) knackered block and (very likely) cracked head , so it seems I may also have a bunch of Auxillary Systems as well !

I am going to suggest go to an outboard.  Extra long shaft Tohatsu sailpro hi thrust, or a 9.9hp hi thrust from Yamaha, and other makes.  I'd go the 6hp, as I see the Raven displacement is only 5,000lbs, and at only 26kg, you can store the outboard on the railing when on a long coastal passage, or just tilt up and leave on the bracket.  

You can also look forward to half a knot boat speed gained by getting rid of that anchor under the water, called a propellor.

Just my opinion, but I also live it as both my previous two yachts, and my current one (will be when launched) were outboard powered, and as long as you get the right bracket, and the extra long shaft, and think about a petrol storage area on deck in a locker, even if you have to build one - is, in my opinion, the way to go for sub 30 foot yachts - and a heck of a lot cheaper overall when you add the purchase of a new inboard, installation and all the other crap you need to buy to make it all work.

A bonus with an outboard is that getting into an out of a marina berth is a piece of cake with the ability to turn the boat on a dime, so getting in an out of a berth is pretty simple..... as per first min or two of my vid below.
(This is my previous boat, displacement 5,500lbs at 26 feet)

I think the reality is that this is the way I will be heading unless I strike things really lucky and manage to get hold of something second hand that is like for like. Then there is the worry of potentially buying another problem.

Charging batteries is not really a concern as I am in a marina with shore power, and even when I go away for a few days to the sounds my power needs are really low with really only a few LED lights so likely that I would not even need to hook a 10hp outboard to the boats battery system and could ditch the starting battery for another house battery.

Also being based in Wellington, days of no wind and needing to motor for a long period are few and far between.

I'd hazard a guess that most of those 26' and under boats have had inboards replaced by outboards now. Our Farr 727 had, and that was 10 year ago.

Where do you keep the boat, and how often are you going to be lifting it on and off? 

If you're lifting a lot, and doing it somewhere awkward like a mooring, the lighter weight of a 2 stroke helps a lot. If the thing's just going to live on the stern except for getting it serviced, and then you lift it off in the marina, doesn't matter so much.

Stays in a marina and would probably stay attached full time so I guess either will be the option
