Farrari 4
It should be good swell wise. It is pretty protected from N to E to S. It might be a bit choppy through Rakino channel getting there but once arrived you would be fine.
Fogg 427
Woody is good unless the swell has signifcant W or N in it. In fact even a big NE coming from across the Gulf can curl around the top of the entrance esp at high tide. But SE it's pretty good.
Megwyn 2
1m easterly on Friday, with SE waves . . . Sounds like fun Woody might be your best bet
ab1974 1
My pick of the top few close to Auckland for the small boats (which is us!) would be either : Oneroa SE corner of Onetangi (near Woodlands Bay - good stoney beach to go ashore Owhanake on NW tip of Waiheke - great in a SE but not sure about somewhere to go ashore (someone might be able to help) Woody Bay on Rakino - great little beach
Guest
Woody looking the top pick, announcement tomorrow. Kawau still good for Sunday.

Tim C 23
Woody looking the top pick, announcement tomorrow. Kawau still good for Sunday. Woody bay could fill up pretty fast I would suggest. How many boats are we expecting? Much as I'm keen to meet at Waiheke, I would think any of those North side Waiheke bays may well be effected by this swell coming in... Maybe Lagoon Bay in Mahurangi is the answer?
Fogg 427
Agree. Fri pm showing fresh E which could generate a roll across N side of Waiheke. If Woody fills quickly you have West Bay next bay around to the south as another option. But ultimately yes Bon Accord better still.
Guest
I don't know Mahurangi that well, where's Lagoon Bay. No idea how many boats
ab1974 1
We'll head for Waiheke / Rakino. Two little kids on board and we want to keep the trips short and the boat is small. I'd have thought Woody Bay / Oneroa / Onetangi woud be OK in the predicted SE. Still think your close to Auckland (ie Rakino or Waiheke) on Friday then Kawau on Sunday is a good plan Squid. PredictWind has swell coming from the South/ South West for Waiheke (more easterly for Kawau). Monday forecast still could be anything from a SW per MetService or E/NE from Predict Wind. Either way Waiheke quicker for us to get home that Kawau. Be good to understand how many are planning to meet up - agree you wouldn't want 40 boats turning up to Woody Bay for this trip at 2pm to already find 10 boats parked up, could be tight. Anyway just my 2c worth
Tim C 23
I don't know Mahurangi that well, where's Lagoon Bay. No idea how many boats Lagoon Bay is first on the right going into the harbour. But thinking about it further would still not be the perfect spot in a SE. What about Rocky Bay, Waiheke? Good SE shelter and off the NE swells track. I'm not familiar with the bay but looks promising on the chart...
Grinna 2
Woody Bay at Rakino was chocka block last weekend and West Bay wasn't much better. Good protection in the easterlies and no roll, but things were tight by the saturday night. Must have been about 40 boats in there. There are 2 beaches to choose from at Woody ... both good. Nowcasting has more south in it at the moment with wind directions being true SE in Tamaki Strait and at Bean Rock. Rocky Bay at Waiheke looks to be about the same size as Woody Bay so not a heap of room there. Not sure what the beach is like. Probably not much protection if it gets much more south in it. Megwyn 2
The part of Rocky Bay that might afford some SE shelter drys at low tide. I have tried to sit just inside the first wee bay in a SE and you still get knocked around alot. It is okay if you can get close in. Okay if it is light. There are a number of moored boats in there, and the beach on that side of the bay has a house right on the beach, which is fenced. Not much room at high tide. It is great in a NE (not that that is much help to you). Sharks Bay?
Guest
Ok, we'll try Woody Bay tomorrow. I'll make a point of being early, your job is to cross my transom (Pork Chop) as close to 2 pm as you can. By being a bit early in the day we should overcome any overcrowding problem. Then we can go ashore for a potluck/social gathering. Smae again SUnday at Mansion House I'll take the phone 021 760 621 if you feel the need to talk to someone and I might try and turn on the VHF, what was that channel again? Megwyn 2
LOL - you said channel 6 Ogre. Have a wonderful time everyone! M
ab1974 1
See you there at 2pm Squid.
Fogg 427
Plan A is still to try for Barrier but Plan B is to hook up with the rest of you renegades. Just a thought, the Auck-Taur race was cancelled due to threat of debris/containers from Rena sweeping up the coast in this SE breeze. Do you think any of them could drfit up as far as Colville and get blown into the Gulf?
Guest
Regarding the potluck, Spoke to the boss and she says: Make it a large afternoon tea kind of deal. Finger food and don't bother with plates knives forks. It is late by 6pm so those that want can go back to their boats have a light dinner, put the kids to sleep etc, if anyone wants to party on they can do so. If boats arrive from 2 pm onwards we can head ashore by 3-3.30, talk/socialise then eats around 4pm Remember to leave a clean wake.
ab1974 1
Done. So who else is coming tomorrow?
