Fees up with a jump

Growing up in state housing in West Auckland, boating was completely unattainable

I say bull sh*t. We grew up in a very poor state of affairs and we managed it. It's all about priorities. My old man traded an old bike for our first 'yacht' full of rot, sails were rubbish, etc.

Lucky you Southernman. Children are unable to make such decisions, with no way to travel to a place that they do not know exists. If their parents are not into sailing, socialise with no one who sails, how is a child of 6 supposed to know how to go about it, let alone prioritise?

Today, for me, it is all about priorities, but not when I was 6-14 and dreamed of sailing.

Well said Megwyn. Many here are intolerant to how tough it is when poor, in the wrong area, and with parents focused on survival ahead of luxuries and wants.

I came from a football/cricket family and hated it. We were very very poor and I worked my ass of to buy my first boats and was a bit of a maverick in my "hood" where everybody did everything but sailing.

In this case I think Southern man probably misunderstood what you were meaning. If not then... :silent:

Understand I think that's a bit different from affordability which is the discussion? No offence meant but your statement above is not about affordability more access? I think there is quite a bit being done at the moment to help underprivileged kids to get into sailing. I know our local club has several school sailing days free of charge every month during summer. The choices are normally in letter sent home to parents along the lines of sailing, rugby, cricket - you choose and guess what most kids choose rugby!

More could be done but the priorities should also be pointed towards getting kids to swim first - and that's another whole topic!

No offence meant.

No offense taken Southernman.

In my case it was the doubled edged sword of access and affordability. But it is a long long story which I have unsuccessfully tried to paraphrase, and, seeing as it is thread drift, have declined to post here.

I personally learned the lesson of prioritising when my daughter was small. I learned that if I really wanted something, I could have or do it - I just needed to want it enough to make it happen. But it took me 30 years before I knew that as a possibility.

There are probably thousands of people out there in the same situation. You don't know you have choices until you know you have choices. And it is a knowing in your heart, not your head.
