  2. Yes, we keep only a couple of the previously expired flares on the boat when we replace them. Don't really find any security in them to me they are more of a hail Mary, I prefer to rely on a VHF radio and a satphone, the best use for them that I can think of is collision avoidance. The Pyro's really are a dinosaur of a bygone age. The LED ones would probably be useful for signalling a rescue chopper or vessel.
  3. I have "tested" 20 years and older flares that worked fine, not Rockets though I thought that would be irresponsible.
  4. That's the thing wheels, they have only ever been in the Grab bag, ok a very damp environment on a race boat but they look like they have been lying in the bilge. I think it is just really crap alloy. Will take them back to the shop so they can send them back to the distributor.

  6. Was having a good sort out on the boat today and thought I would go through the Grab bag and double check the safety gear the bag was dry and is wall mounted. These flares are less than a year old, they are not cheap and dodgy (being German made and cost $50 each for a red hand flare), they are clearly not suitable for a marine environment. I have flares 20 years old that are in better condition than these, it's time YNZ had another look at these things as they are clearly a liability and should not be relied on.
  7. Bugger that sucks. Hope the damage isn't bad.
  8. Yes was a bit concerned that it would all work but went pretty smoothly in the end. Even the prop is damn close get 4000 in neutral and 3900 in gear.
  9. The problem here is that we only get to hear one side of the story. Here is a novel idea instead of whingeing on an internet forum. Ring the guy up or go and talk to him. A lot more productive.
  10. As soon as you mentioned the occupation and the town you pretty much outed the guy. All I can say is good luck with Auckland prices you may be in for a shock.
  11. Thought he was a bit older than that, I known him since I was about 5 years old.
  12. A business run by an 80 year old i'd say. To be fair he probably doesn't remember the initial quote as he usually doesn't do them. You would be much better off going down and talking to him, the guy is old school. Surprised you managed to get him on the phone. Most likely there were a few things noticed on the re-rig that needed attending to.
  13. When I first got back from overseas about 2003 no one bothered policing cable tags or electrical wofs. Things seemed to start changing around 2008 and have steadily become more and more gestapo like, to the point where they are policing made up rules. One marina even starting wandering around testing the pier RCD's once a week until an electrician friend of mine told them it was a stupid idea.
  14. Can't imagine this dog causing that sort of trouble. It does make me think there is a solution to the canine ablution problem though, just aquire one of Bazza's sleeping bags and put it where you want the dog to go. Solved!
  15. She wouldn't be the first one to play up when visiting someone else's boat.
  16. Had our little Dog on board from the day she arrived, even lived aboard for about 8 months, travelled the coast between Tauranga and Bay of Islands. Can be a pain getting her enough exercise and toilet stops but went ashore in a few places we wouldn't have otherwise so part of the adventure. She handled it all fine until one day a F#$%wit on a big gin palace went past at high speed while we were anchored and sent the dishes smashing onto the floor and now she is sh*t scared of any loud noise and becomes quite stressed. Hopefully with time she will return to normal.
  17. Pretty hard to weld cast alloy, I'd say it's suitable for parts only.

    Sold!

I really think you should just let this guy have some peace, not everyone thinks the same and some have more difficulty dealing with life than others. Would definitely like to hear what he's up to but but berating someone for having a go with whatever means he has at his disposal is unnecessary, good on him I say.

    New dodger

With no clears it would probably look a bit unusual, the hard thing with a dodger is making it look the part. I set ours up so standing up I can look over it but can and do use the clears while steering seated, ours are on their 3rd year now and are still reasonably see through provided they get a wash every now and again. Also good to hang out behind the dodger at anchor when its raining and blowing to keep an eye on things through the clears.
  20. Nice one Josh, will be hugely beneficial for the young fellas, don't forget to enjoy yourself. Jealous much.
