  1. Yeah agree that contractors would want some sort of insurance cover but friends? I guess you could just give all your friends a share in the boat for 1 dollar, then you are all owners problem solved. This sort of idiotic bureaucracy just does my head in.
  2. So this is what it has come to. This little Gem was in our latest Marina newsletter. " Please be AWARE – anyone ( friend / contractor ) working on your boat MUST be inducted into the marina, and provide proof of insurance with a $ 5 million in Ship repairers or similar insurance." What a load of sh*t. We can't get any mates to help us sand the bottom of the boat without an induction and $5 million cover. We need to stand up to these f#*#ers.
  3. I have been using an android one for about 4 years called Anchor Alarm, works very well. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.meditgbr.android.anchoralarm&hl=en Nice to have when its windy as it displays the distance from where you dropped the pick even before it triggers the alarm. Good piece of mind without having to get out of your bunk.
  4. Good decision to truck it. We brought our SR26 from Nelson to Tauranga on a borrowed Fizz boat trailer and it had big ugly wings on it so was overwidth would barely fit through the Ferry Gates but didn't bother anyone, even the cop who stopped when we were retying everything to ask if we needed a hand.
  5. This Boys and Girls is why you should say no to drugs.
  6. Yep sounds like some sort of smart charger although 14 is a little on the low side, adsorption should be around 14.5 - 14.7 for a normal lead acid and around 13.5 - 13.7 for float. What type of batteries are in the vessel?
  7. Seems the the Coastgaurd is picking lifejackets as an easy drum to beat. Similar to the way the police use speeding. Or climate scientists have used carbon emissions for that matter.
  8. Definitely like doing mods and it can be very satisfying. But unless you do the bulk of it yourself it can be eye wateringly expensive. The hard bit with the keel would be getting the engineering right so it doesn't fall off. That said if you can copy someone who has already done it easy. In my humble opinion the easiest way to make a boat plane earlier is to make it lighter. You could probably save a significant amount of weight with no loss of righting moment by going for a bulb keel. Not sure about the bow mod but certainly seems to work for the Meister.
  9. The transom itself is probably marginally heavier but with all the other cockpit mods we did at the same time the boat is a little lighter.
  10. Yes it takes a bit to get your hard around all the different loads involved. We added a lot of structure. The main concern was the support for the rudder. You can see on Booboos post he left a big support for his. We add a large post to the rudder bearers and tied it into a half bulkhead with lots of knees and glass. Also.not in the PIC is the traveller running the full width behind the helmsman position it's actually stiffer than it was before.
  11. We cut the transom out of Berenice and after using it like that for a while would definitely not go back, not only great at anchor (with all extra usable space) but loading up for the weekend at the dock takes half the time.
  12. You should probably be looking at 88's as well. Not as exciting as 930's at times but really good all rounder. Lots of cockpit space for the after race debrief as well. Not overly deep which can be useful in the harbor.
  13. I like the idea of modding a boat and for some reason we seem to get attached to the ones we have. That said it's always a lot cheaper to buy a boat with all the mods already done. I think you will find the keel alone will go most of the way towards buying another boat.
  14. Thinking of heading up that way in a couple of weeks, what was the entrance like at Houhora?
  15. A friend of mine had a Bene 285 for a while, lots of room but more a motor sailer than the others is about the nicest thing I can say. My pic would be the Carpenter 29 really nice boats and probably a step above the D28 which are also great boats. Lotus 9.2's are a bit heavier but bulletproof.
  16. Yes listened to Garner yesterday, what they failed Highlight was the Guys tried to go back in the Bar on the outgoing tide at almost low, with a large swell from the west, worst possible time to go in. Like we have been saying hard to legislate against stupid.
  17. It's a long way into Whitianga just to pick up passengers and go again. It is safe in that it's pretty much all weather but i'd be looking at Kuaotunu if the weather permitted. That said Whitianga is a great place to spend a day or two, nice cafes, bars and restaurants we usually stop there at some stage over the Christmas break.

  19. Funny how people have different idea about how much growth is acceptable, I would sleep at night if my boat was a dirty as the previous photos. I get annoyed about a small layer of slime. The last few years I have been using a light grey wet and forget antifoul. Snigger if you like but it works really well and is only a quarter of the price of 66. I usually haul once every 6 months for a clean and do a re coat about every 18 months but am very fussy about keeping it clean so brush every couple of weeks in the summer.
  20. Looks like Anarchy is just off TeKaha, hopefully the others will come back into range shortly. Must have been a bit of slow going last night, nice night to be out there though.
  21. Watch the video seems to work at 3 knots.
  22. With all the new rules on anti fouling and not being allowed to scape hulls any longer, why can't we buy this antifoul paint for yachts. Meant to last for 90 months and boicide free. Doesn't make sense to me. http://www.international-marine.com/foulrelease/slime-release-coatings.aspx
  23. Yes it says unless you are sailing a Euro boat forget it.
  24. Both Spindrift 2 and Idec Sport currently on the way around. Tracker here http://volodiaja.net/Tracking/ IDEC left a bit earlier so I think that's why there are 2 IDEC's on the tracker. Spindrift in the Bay of Biscay http://www.spindrift...-de-gascogne-en
