  1. I don't recall a NZ cup boat breaking in half. Iain Murrays aussie boat snapped when they over cooked the rig tension, but I've done that to a wooden fireball, which was no reflection on the design.
  2. And on a similar topic (Sorry but I didn't feel it justified it's own thread)... Growing up in Whangarei there was a large yacht being built in a barn on Beach Road, in Onerahi. About 60 feet from memory. Designed by, and slowly being brought to fruition by a Bob Wilkinson. I remember clambering over it as a young lad. The shed was built in a position where Bob planned to run a couple of miles of cable across the bay to Waikaraka point, and winch the boat into the water from there. When I left the country in 2001 it was still there, but when I returned about eight years later it wa
  3. What really winds me up about this whole pointless situation is that the media paint it as a yachties vs locals issue. Sean Plunket often raises this topic on his radio live show, and in true storyteller style doesn't let the truth get in the way. Every time it comes up I text and/or email explaining that most yachties I know don't want the campground gone or the marine hub there, and yet he filters them out every time, saying all the sailing community want this hub! Makes us sailors out to be some bunch of filthy rich tossers. Dunno about you lot, but for me it's just one of two
  4. I'm not moving the sheets under the tramp, I feel they need to be accessible in case of tangles or whatever. What I'm planning is to run a high strength line from main beam to third beam under the tramp, which will take the load. There will be a small loop in this line, passing up through the tramp, with the lead block attached to it. I may run a second line parallel to this slightly outboard just to open the slot on those breezier days when course or sea state dictate not putting on a smaller jib. Not a purely original idea, I borrowed it from the Loday/White Spitfire design. I ha
  5. If you're more into the racing side, why not make things like the icebox clip-in and totally removable? That way they can stay in your garage for 8 months of the year, and can live on the boat between Christmas and Easter when you want to do the whole cruisey thing.
  6. What happened about this? I may know someone interested.
  7. It's not so much of a refurb, more like a "hide-the-string" type of thing. Anthony has done a fantastic job on the hulls, so it's just little things like running lines under the tramp for the jibsheet leads, so the kids don't trip over them. And eventually I'll venture indoors to create some sleeping area, at this point I've not gone forard past the centrecases.
  8. Weymouth YC is hosting a small boat regatta on Sunday December 13. The Frostbite sailors make the pilgrimage from Taikata, and hopefully we'll get the Laser and Jolly fleet up to a decent size too. That said, if it sails it's welcome to join in. There's even a small trailer yacht fleet of assorted 16 footers. As I'm not heavily involved in the club at present, that's all I know at this point. We're still in early planning. More details to come.
  9. Try Stanley Marine in whangarei. They do a lot of second hand stuff and obscure spare parts.
  10. I'm hoping that some well meaning do gooder didn't see me in the dinghy and call the coastguard when I disappeared. I just motored straight between the hulls and got to work. I noticed the cg boat idling around the moored boats as I headed back at dusk. Looked like they were looking for something.
  11. Long walk through the mud when I came back at low tide tho! Went over from farm cove this afternoon, lashing the front tramp and rescuing that batten. Got one side done, main beam and port hull to go.
  12. Yep, "What he said!" I bought Euphoria from ScottiE. She's a mark 1 all 'glass GBE. Pretty much standard except for some high aspect daggers and rudder blades. My next mission is to remove all the systems and change them to my tastes. Oh, and give Anthony his mooring back!
  13. Two gentle sails so far. Far gentler than the forecast says they're going to be! Probably a good thing considering the youngest crew is 9 months at this point. The older kids are loving it!
  14. On a similar topic, I have a very slow leak in my dinghy. It's a southern pacific or something similar. I'm pretty sure it's leaking around an old repair which is peeling slightly. It looks like the previous owner used F2 or similar adhesive. Will heat work in the same way on something like that? Or, what's the best place to get some cloth and adhesive for a new repair?
  15. I don't know the area at all, how long would the walk be? And where is good to anchor? I've spent a lot of time racing small boats but totally new to this cruising lark. Still working out the sleeping arrangements for the GBE.
  16. Ok, So, apparently Fat Freddy's Drop are playing a gig at Cable Bay Waiheke on Auckland Anniversary weekend Sunday night. Does anyone know whether or not you can hear things like this from the water? And if so, would it make an interesting stopover for the night? Perhaps Mahurangi Saturday night, then Cable Bay Sunday night? I'm assuming that the beach is public (for a bbq maybe?) but of course if it's private then this won't work too well. Edit: Just found out where the gig is, it's quite a long way from the water, so scrap this. Anyone got any better ideas?
  17. Looks expensive, when I went past late afternoon the coastguard boat was standing by, and when I went past earlier in the day there were a bunch of people gathered around, although I couldn't tell much from the road.
  18. Erm, I'm not sure I'm allowed to say. I've just done a 5 figure bank deposit into the present/ex owners account, dunno whether it's got to him yet. Jeez I hope we got the account numbers right! Let's just say its a GBE and the owner has gone "Ballistic" At this point no pics, but will be quite prolific with them as it gets a little warmer. Mrs Mad is actually a pro photographer, or was before babies got in the way. Of course, if the soon-to-be-former-owner feels so inclined, chuck some pics up!! You're bound to have some!
  19. Just a quick update... New boat purchased, not one of the original list, but possibly faster. Also marginally bigger. Looking forward to the spring regatta, is it still one long race?
  20. As boats keep getting bigger and faster, how much of it really is massive design improvement, and how much is just through pushing harder? Take for instance the mighty Sundreamer, holder at different times of various records, including the A2T, which I believe still stands. And Vodafone, gradually trying to take those records. Same size boat, twice the rig! If the conditions were right, and the guys just didn't back off, how far from taking the Coastal record could Sundreamer be? I'm guessing not far, if at all. Or perhaps they could push the Tauranga record just a little furth
  21. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=913528450 So if anyone else wants to join the fleet... Now's your chance!
  22. Gotta love that. I've been wondering all week how to moor a big cat. I guess I'll get the old owner to demonstrate! When we took Tribesman out for a test sail (Who bought her, btw?) I reverse parked her into the piles at Weiti with a massive incoming tide, and got the biggest head swell, 'cos the owner kept telling me to abort, until I told him to raise his hand and grab the bow line. I simply leaned over and lifted the stern lines into place with zero effort. Steerable outboards make it SO easy. Plus, she was a tri, so pretty much like handling a monohull. I'm anticipating a few
  23. Only decent picture I could find! Just in response to the Accord comment above it really. I once had an outboard called a Wind 8hp, was made in Russia by a company called Volga motors (seriously). Fantastic motor, ran like a dream once they replaced the faulty ignition coil they'd all been shipped with! If I still had it, I'd be using it!! Apparently the Wind was more reliable than Tim's Sail
  24. Or you could go Nissan... Home > Products > NSF6
  25. Thanks. Starting to feel a bit Euphoric already!
