  1. Thanks - but I don't think that is what is going to help. I am trying to isolate where a noisy signal is coming from - its do with the alternator regulator and I think its either EMI or noisy 12v output from the switch mode side of the regulator.
  2. This might be a long shot - but does anyone have a Balmar MC-614 regulator I could borrow for a day? I am trying to find out why my MC-614 is generating noise on my sonar, and want to rule out a faulty unit.
  3. Actually worth noting that I am talking about North Cape - not Cape Reinga which looks to be considerably worse. NIWA were happy to help (but it doesn't cover North Cape)
  4. Guess best to give it a wide berth. 6 knots of current must be when the ocean currents and the tidal stream all come together. Navionics shows the tidal stream never staying in the same direction for long, but on average only peaking at 2-2.5 knots.
  5. Yeah that's awesome - found that in the app now too. Thank you, 2.8 Knots seems to be the highest current value I could see predicted in the next few days.
  6. Where do you find tide stream data for north cape - or at least a way to work out which way the current is flowing at a given date and time? Thanks Al
  7. Spin Lock 3 point tether - Burnsco and others = $179 you can get it from Monkeys Fist website in Australia for $90. Thats almost 50% cheaper. Even with conversion and shipping its still much cheaper.
  8. Thanks. What was there is definitely no longer allowed (it was sleeved stainless).
  9. Interesting - its what the PO had - but it was raised about an 1/2 inch off the floor of the wooden lattice that runs along the floor of the cockpit so you would never really stand on it.
  10. What is allowed for the jackline that runs along the bottom of the center cockpit when going offshore? Dynema or wire?
  11. If nothing else at least it's not in the ocean!
  12. Ahh good - the govt. is putting the nails in the coffin as well : https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/7442428/Scallop-quota-rise-sparks-fears?fbclid=IwAR28dv7dZnCCqF6hCDixJXMA8eKdFeZv2saaI0KdsIL58C6voBwg8CqHw2M

    Starlink

Interesting. Your probably right - right now you couldn't sail to Fiji and have coverage - but its coming. I understand the antenna's are phased array and Musk has said he will be offering a service for boats - so it may not need new hardware for a boat - just a software upgrade. I don't really know what all this phased array means, but apparently you don't need a complicated gyro stabilized antenna - it just needs to be vaguely point in the right direction. Re boats - I think it needs about 8-9A @ 12V.

    Starlink

Anyone have any plans to put Starlink on there boat? It should really start to hurt offerings from Iridium like the Go. Also would almost seem pointless to have a Sat TV dome at $5,000 when you can just stream everything over Starlink (although not subscription fee for Freeview).
  15. Yip - navionics sonar has that whole area pretty shallow. Good tip about the Kiwi. I have walked many miles on Motuihe at night. Often see the kiwi but never looked in the location you describe.
  16. Yeah tiri would make a great MR. It's a reserve above the water....
  17. Marine Reserves do little to increase the biomass outside the reserve if the reserve is too small (and not part of a planned larger network of MRs). The MR at Goat Island is a good example - only 5sq km - there are very few snapper just outside the MR because of edge fishing. Even whats in the MR is not as much as it could be. Dr.Grace states that the MR's need to be at least 40 sq km each - and carefully selected through out the gulf to catch various types of habitat - again at least 10% of the gulf needs to be MR. 20% would be better. No expert here - but that is what the report
  18. The report states you need to lock off 10%. It also details that the reserves must be of a certain size to be effective (Goat Island for example is to small). If you aren't going to listen to the research and scientists then what do you suggest? At this point anything is better than nothing.
  19. He doesnt even reply to LegaSea. This is a great read : https://www.emr.org.nz/images/emr/pdf/why-mr/Why-do-we-need-MR-Dr Roger-Grace.pdf Short version : both commercial and recreational can continue to fish if we make 10% of the gulf a marine reserve, those reserves would act like protected creches.
  20. Harbor master can only be shamed into action - that is about right. The number of people going through the AM Cup spectator fleet last weekend at well over 5 knots was crazy.

    Damn!!

Maxprop seems pretty good and there customer service is outstanding. Have done a live video with them when diagnosing a prop issue while boat was in cradle. (and that was 20 years after they sold me the prop)
  22. RH, and it's a 18 inch prop. Sorry the info is slow.
  23. 30iso over 79mm. How do you find the kiwi prop. Definitely looking at it for a option.
