  1. hi all, bought a cheap ssb off tm connected to 12volt battery charger and ..................... nothing power is getting through the fuse and being switched by the on-volume switch but nothing lights up, no hiss from speaker, no clicks from mic google turned up very, very little about them probably from about 1975, made by AWA NZ, only 25W? output power and were fitted to coastal fishing boats that didn't need ocean spanning power has built in antenna tuner tomorrow will try hooking it up to the car battery as i know from working on the autotiller th
  2. as previously stated mine is connected to GPS when vhf on but gps off a satellite icon with strength waves? flashes on the display when the gps signal is received the sat. icon stops flashing and the strength waves ripple also pressing setup causes the date, lat/long + MMSI to scroll across the bottom of the display and for distress we should ask coast guard if we can have a test day from marinas - moorings and see what who gets what
  3. if a DSC VHF distress call with lat/long will show up on your plotter will it show up on a coast guard or police launch plotter? ie is this DSC receive blindspot nz coastguard stations only or is it land stations and coastguard boats?
  4. while we're griping about VHF after getting my DSC VHF hooked up to the GPS i thought coastguard would immediately know where i was if i pushed the distress button within range of a station but when i asked about this at the recent coastguard open day at mechanics bay they said "no actually, your VHF may very well fire off the lat/long from your GPS but our NZ system isn't configured to receive it, so don't believe the radio manual that says you can press the distress button + abandon ship secure in the knowledge that your GPS linked DSC VHF will continually broadcast your posi

    Morning Star

Spokesman Steve Rendle said today that Maritime Radio recorded a call from the ketch at 2.30am on Friday, after the yacht's engine broke down during a trip from Opua to the Marlborough Sounds. Its skipper was seeking a tow to Whakatane from about 20 nautical miles east of White Island, but there were no vessels available in the area to assist them. The crew tried to reach the coast throughout Friday and Saturday despite being hampered by broken sails, Mr Rendle said. presumably someone will salvage? or will the air force shoot it full of holes, hazard to navigation, as a training exe
  10. lucky and extremely stupid Authorities are calling on people to be more responsible after a man jumped from a fishing vessel following a drunken argument at sea early yesterday morning. The man told his two associates he was swimming towards another boat - about 6km away - and when they could no longer see him, they raised the alarm fearing he was in danger.\ The man, in his early 40s, had been intent on swimming towards a boat near Chamberlains Bay - only he was swimming in the wrong direction. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11450238
  11. guess easiest would be a tow from a hard dinghy with outboard also you could probably tow it with a hard dinghy and long oars recently did this, against a light wind, to a 1000?kg motor boat that had died 100mt off the dock at okahu or kedge it with any dinghy and 2 anchors

i imagine the problems with titanium alloys are cost (10 times ss), hardness, brittleness + though it doesn't corrode with carbon it does with aluminium alloys difficult to extract from it's oxide = expensive hardness = bugger to form, cut threads etc very little flex = worse tendency to fatigue and crack than ss
  18. yes looks like the media are mixing video and stories of the 4 boats caught in the storm at least the ones that radioed for assistance? could be that these weren't blue water sailors crossing the atlantic but coastal? sailors tripping around the azores helos don't have a big range...
  19. Four yachts called in to shore for help because of the severe storm, the Associated Press reported. One of the boats was carrying a French couple and their two children, officials said. The sailboat sank and the 6-year-old girl, who had spent hours in the ocean while they were waiting to be rescued, died later of hypothermia, according to the AP. The mother and 9-year-old son were picked up by a merchant ship after managing to climb onto the yacht's lifeboat. http://abcnews.go.com/International/dramatic-video-shows-air-rescue-stranded-passengers-mid/story?id=30902426
  20. hope there is a little more story as to why they decided to get off a yacht that still had good sails and engine

thanks Mix a paste using water and oxalic acid. Oxalic acid is a mild bleach that is sold in hardware stores, usually in the form of small crystals. In a plastic cup, mix 3 parts oxalic acid crystals to 1 part hot water, stirring until the mixture is dissolved. Do not use a metal container or a metal utensil when making this mixture, as the oxalic acid can discolor the metal. http://www.bunnings.co.nz/jac-jay-oxalic-acid-500g_p00728384 I looked up a store-bought hull cleaner'sMSDS (material safety data sheet which lists ingredients) and lo and behold...it is 1 to 5 percent 2-Butoxyethan

have been in the habit of using a wire wheel to clean up rust stains but as Steve says the stains reform from the wire brush residue so presumably #1000 wet'n'dry?
  24. our house cyl started leaking last year was an old copper one and according to the label was 20 gallons so probably 40? years old and still had scrap value we went copper again couldn't justify the extra expense of the ss (i guess the new copper isn't as thick as the old but i bet the ss is as thin as possible too)
  25. apparently ports have offered to extend only the eastern wharf http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=11441189 but lenny needs them to stop both if he hopes to get ratepayers to fund his train set AND another unfunded $25million hit http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=11441041
