  1. Have googled thanks harry. Reasonably close to me..depending on how many road cones. I have done a bit more investigating on 1708 via the interwebs, and seems that's a reference to 17 Ounces = 481 grams. NZ seems to sell this biaxial stuff in either 400 or 600 grams, and then either with or without the chopped strand backing. I plan to use this for the structural areas of the boat. I am now discovering not all FG cloth is the same. Steep learning curve, but all good fun.
  2. I'm starting to make a list of all the materials I need for my big rebuild (DIY this time, not paying a professional if I can help it). I think I want the version of 1708 that has chopped strand on one side. As with a lot of reading I do, I'm reading about an American rebuild of a similar GRP yacht, and of course its all American products... Cheers
  3. The punk on the powerboat needs the book thrown at him. He can defend himself in court, no problem with that -- we are a modern democratic nation with the whole "innocent until proven guilty" thing as much as sometimes we feels things are cut and dried However, no matter what evasive action the ferry "shoulda coulda woulda" taken, the stinkpot was obviously exceeding the confined waters speed limit which massively contributed to the eventual impact collision with the resultant life threatening injuries to the ferry skipper.....if found guilty there just has to be some very seri
  4. I have literally just taken these off the boat I am refurbishing and are for sale. No issues with them that I can see, appear to be in good condition. They are 130mm in height, about 150mm in width to the outer lip and come with handles. Handles are just under 360mm long Using what I have seen over the years for these Murray winches on trade me as a guide, offering them for $275 ea, or $480 if you take the pair. Not willing to post, so prefer an Auckland buyer to pick up, though if you are not in Auckland perhaps a mate visiting can pick up. PM or mob: 0220 485 474.
  5. Would they throw sailboats in with the power boats in any licenscing/registration? That to me is always the risk - I'm not saying yachties are not immune to dickhead behaviour, but I think you know what I'm getting at..
  6. Oh my god..he has passed away... Is it too early to ask how the hell can some f__king idiot in a power boat could not see the Ferry. Edit: are we 100% sure he has passed? I just listened to a news report on Radio NZ and they are saying he is "critically injured" but they did not say he had passed?
  7. Is it just me, or are we experiencing months of sh#t weather more than usual. Summer was a write off, and it doesn't seem to be getting much better, albeit winter approaching. It's probably as bad as it's always been - this is NZ, the land of four seasons in a day, but sheesh can't someone go for a sail and get some decent weather to get going, including the Solo Tasman guys / girl... Ah well, I guess that is why we have some of the best racing sailors in the world...our weather demands it.
  8. If you have labour skills, woodwork fibreglassing skills, you are ahead of the game if you want to do a "do up"... it will still be expensive but maybe you won't have to busk till dawn with your ukulele
  9. And here I am - damn fool - about to embark on doing up a old 28 footer! But I have learnt some DIY skills....the hard way. Don't follow in my footsteps, unless you like being poor 😉
  10. As someone who over capitalised a 26 foot boat by about, oh....$100K, guys like Panther and Mattm are speaking the truth. You sound, with all due respect, green as grass - much like I was 7 or 8 years ago. EVERYTHING ends up costing you DOUBLE if not TRIPLE what you think it will - and yes, you will be paying NZ's exorbitant prices for everything from paint to rope to fittings - everything marine (if you want quality) is damn expensive in NZ. Even the chinese sh#t fixtures and fittings sold by a lot of Chandlers is expensive. Save up $60 - $70K and buy a nice comfortable 28 -32 footer,
  11. Reigniting this after a year to see if anyone knows of a NZ Distributor or sort of a contactor that can import Alexseal paints, or if your only option is to get imported yourself via the Aussie distributor? I don't mind paying a bit more if I don't have to faff about with the import paperwork. Cheers

Holy SH*t ALib did not realise boats like yours at DYC were hit. My commiserations mate.

From memory, that microburst also picked up a yacht of around 30-35 foot in a berth in X pier I think it was, and dumped it back down, smashing it up pretty good
  14. Just. read it. Disgusting rich pr*cks at Akarana huh. That's the feeling I got from that article. I'm sure there are "two sides" but don't think I will be joining Captain Piddlemarks at the Akarana Christmas Dinner this year old chaps.
  15. I have Digby Taylors book, 'One Mans Dream' and it is really a great read
  16. NZ Tiger....Yeah the big boats big Cat Condos, eg La Vagabonde....I have never seen the attraction sailing wise. Good on 'em, they are earning big money, and getting great deals on these boats to sail where they want, and I guess her being attractive, along with reality Tv type (ie not real) drama, draws people in. But, they do less thnt zero of interest to me - but takes all sorts, so again, not going to begrudge them and similar channels.
  17. I doubt indeed he would show up on Youtube recommendations! BP: "What Youtube recommendations? What are they?"
  18. When does low budget cruising become an irresponsible hazard to others? First Sam leaves his 'free' boat unattended with inadequate ground tackle, and it goes for a wander. His attitude was "Well the area I anchored was full of abandoned boats, so who cares" Then in the next vid, he runs aground on a beach. Apparently a year before we took a small hobie cat I think, from Florida to Bahamas with a chicky babe crew, and just left the wrecked vessel on a beach when he ran into difficulties. I'm torn - I've run across the plummed voiced "Yachtsman" or 'Captain Piddlemarks' type
  19. Ok fair enough Rangi...I'm calmed down a bit and hopefully a few others have too. I was actually taking the Michael a bit with my generalisation, and even thought about deleting my post couple mins later early this morning, but started work, and forgot about it - then saw the pile on, and got a little testy. As someone said, there's has been more serious things going on recently - lets just put it down to blokes letting of steam, me included. Cheers
  20. SHK and Harry - gotta say this is a bit rough on launch owners - they are not all like that, some of them don't buzz with the generators all night . You shouldn't generalise. Naughty naughty. Does it say more about you guys than them? Maybe ask Rangi1.
  21. Well done, good for you, and a absolutely fair comparison with a junk rigged, heavy displacement, non racing folkboat clone . My sincere apologies...mate.
  22. Yeah bro will bro thanks bro
  23. Here we go -- Harrytom calling for 'Regulation' due to this Riveria' antics - and that's after Psyche (the new site owner?) called stinkpot owners "the preponderance of giant launches purchased by people who are morons...." So, I am going to be little stronger in my reply to you guys in this thread that piled onto me - go get stuffed and apply your same 'outrage' to everyone else that may have used generalisations - FFS. Cheers --------------------------------------
  24. Wow. Weird. The number of members on here that have complained about Pillocks in Riverias and the like , be it exceeding the speed limit, creating unneccesary wake, almost hitting your yacht...you guys even started and conrtibuted to a thread about it: I think it says more about you lot than anyone else. Edit: Ok, yeah yeah, if you didn't directly contribute to that particular Pillock thread, then good on yah, but you know what I am saying -- it's been open season on stinkpot boaties in that thread and on Crew.org in general about stinkpots -- so, frankly, I find your little
  25. You forgot the "beer in one hand, fishing rod in the other" I too detest the 'Boatie' term. I detest 'Boaties' full stop. I have no respect for anyone on a stinkpot. But, unfortunately, the term is embedded in the media.
