  1. Went around last time the Marshall did it and got killed... Good luck!!
  2. It was just prod envy, wasn't it Booboo?
  3. Really? We used to build boilers and air receivers in the workshop in Wellington where I did my time, and we NEVER had a failure like this. I'd love to know where that failure was you are talking about and the cause!
  4. Yeah. Scary huh? "Seeing failures not seen since the 1930s" was an interesting statement.
  5. This is unreal Wheels. Check out the attached file. This is a report from a few years ago, but it shows how bad Chinese products can be, and that the QC procedures need to be extremely thorough. I have imported EXCELLENT products from China (loadcells) in the past that were better than their German made equivilents, but the training and QC that went into the factory making these products was led by an American educated Taiwanese engineer, and he was very stringent with his rules and processes. What was the engineering company thinking? China_hydrotest_failure.pdf
  6. Thanks IT. Nice summary and good to see what part of maritime law they were using. It does seem that this guy's biggest mistake was telling someone they would report every day, then not doing it. As he was able to make it ashore and go hunting, I would have thought he could have got a message through somehow. I don't do trip reports either, unless we are required to racing, or perhaps it was a longer trip and I just had the kids, but even then, probably not. Someone ashore always knows what we are up to but wouldn't report us missing unless we were out of contact a fair old while and then
  7. Yachting needs more Jim Kilroys. RIP.
  8. IT. What do you think? A polite forum letter to MNZ asking for an explanation?
  9. Nice job Chrisc. Please let us know what kind of response you get! It will be very interesting to read their justification for this.
  10. Bad things are happening at Gulf Harbour. How about $100 a day to store a Ross 40 mast?? I could add more, but it certainly looks like someone maximising profits. On the other hand, dealing with Brin Wilson and the other pros up there was nothing but a pleasure!!
  11. Just read this whole thread. Unreal! If I was in NZ I would be happy to help this guy out with some safety gear. I have a spare VHF at home. MNZ. What mongrels. Like someone else said already, this guy's only crime was not to call home. This is very heavy handed action and certainly not the way we want to see NZ going. I'm pretty disgusted.

    Cat 1

We used the Trisail in the last leg of the RNI when the boom broke on the Marshall, but only for a short time before we loose footed the main (Gavin's excellent idea!) We have a separate track for the trisail, and a gate. The gate gave me the most grief. Took forever to get it in and out. If it was already rigged it would be easy to hoist, but like Booboo says, you have to go forward to sort out the main and get it tied down. That's no fun.. We also have a cassette that mounts on the stern of the Marshall and a plan to drop the rudder out of the bottom of the boat and plug the hole if need be
  13. Saw the finished items at KMs the other day Wheels! Very nice indeed. Bugger doing those inside TIG welds on the 8mm ones. Micro torch?? Nice work!
  14. Good info, cheers! They are fun boats for sure..
  15. Constant trash talk going on between Ross 40 owners... Looks like the Marshall is a heavy old beast compared to the other lightweights.... I would only believe all of these weights when they are on loadcells though..
  16. I have only weighed the Marshall on travel-lifts so the weight is not accurate, and most times with full diesel and half full water. She is usually around 6000 to 6300kg. I would love to get an accurate weight. maybe we need to borrow some loadcells and put a cradle on them, then do some lifts maybe with a group discount? I know there are quite a few boatbuilders I built loadcell mounts for a few years back, generally 10t mounts, so 30t capacity which would give 5kg resolution using 3 loadcell mounts, 2 at the back of the cradle and one at the front... It would be great to get all the current
  17. The cockpit is a lot rougher than it looks in the photos. Prod is only undercoat..
  18. Stripped for painting.. Nice to be undercover for this...
  19. Fully agree with that comment, having used Westhaven, Gulf harbour and Bayswater all recently. Top bunch in at Half Moon Bay.
  20. Nice work wheels. Not sure about the TIG welding on those hooks. Looks a bit like MY efforts!!
  21. The old fin is a Valium design by Ian Vickers. The new bulb is Kevin Dibley, as is the bowsprit.
  22. Melted the old bulb into the new one! Old bulb was 1650kg. New bulb is 1900kg. Poor man's way of getting a little extra righting moment.
