  1. Thanks KnotMe, maybe Who are the other 3. I like KJ when I met him.
  2. Thanks Vorpal. My brain fade. Corrected.
  3. I'm considering getting Kevin Johnson to replace my teak rails on a 70s fiberglass sailing boat. Given the sensitivities, if anyone has feedback, could they get in touch with me directly rather than reply here. kevinjohnsonboatbuilders.co.nz ta kevin1mccready@gmail.com +64 (0)9 528 1174 home +64 (0)226 710 335 cell
  4. http://www.niufm.com/whats-fresh/maiden-voyage-from-nz-early-next-year-for-new-tongan-shipping-boat Has anyone been following this?
  5. Thanks for report and the good tips on diff acids. All acids in strong concentrations need careful handling. I recall in my first year chem lab seeing acetic acid in our stores. Nice, vinegar, I'll have a sniff. I forgot to use the gentle wafting of the hand motion I had been taught. Nice Big Sniff to remind me of what I like on fish and chips. BANG. I staggered and would have fallen had I not caught hold of the lab bench. BTW MSG is a brilliant rust remover which won't eat metal. You need to soak the part for weeks though. And one more story for fun and interest. A group of us wer
  6. knotme the idea that the world was round was once "ludicrous". You should get out more. BTW are you seriously calling slanty's contribution ludicrous? I'm also guessing you have an idea of how much of our current world was developed in non profit government labs before the crazy drive for privatising everything? I'm afraid too many ppl drink the koolaid these days.
  7. Sorry, wrong Matt, I meant the other matt (I hate these anonymous names). But to address the question, I disagree it's totally unrealistic. Imagine .... as John Lennon sang. A good step along the way would be more power to regulators to rein in superprofits (they could do that via a "secret" process). We saw "democracy" introduced to the west a few centuries ago; they just forgot to give individuals instead of dollars the vote in company structures.
  8. matt and hb - you're attacking a strawman. read what I said please.
  9. Not accusing them. Making a general statement. In absence of transparency .... I should have added "secrecy stinks". It's well known that we all get better results from open science.
  10. I'd like it as cheap as a fair day's work for a fair day's pay. Superprofits and luck and greed stink.
  11. Well done! As a matter of safe practice I don't sail with the front hatch open unless moving sails above or below.
  12. Or seal popped. Could be a good story in damages litigation.
  13. Peter Pan is said to be 21 foot here. But yes. Amazing what people will do. http://www.kristiina.kaapeli.fi/log11.htm
  14. As always, asking price and price are two different things. I got my mooring in Okahu Bay for $1500. If you decide the TS route (and I wouldn't but did in my early days of learning to sail), check the hull for stone damage. Water into the weave through the gel coat where road stones have penetrated means expensive repairs.
  15. Why have cord to pull down the jib? It would be small enough to pull down via the luff.
  16. 20 foot will do it for around the gulf and GB, though you will be slower unless you have a planing boat. Look to your safety systems first (lifejacket on at all times, trip reports, two forms of waterproof communication, safety harness etc) and I wouldn't go big screen nav. Learn how to use paper charts first (handheld compass parallel ruler, pencil and eraser) and get your GPS with a garmin or something. Learn how to heave-to.
  17. BTW Scottie. Conflating drink driving with failing to use a blinker etc is a bit silly.
  18. Ok. Fair enough. I was using the word evil to convey my strong reaction to drink drivers. I actually don't believe in evil despite the utility of the word. https://kmccready.wordpress.com/2016/01/07/evil/
  19. Scottie. LOL. Manage your own emotions, like a big boy. You're all grown up now I presume? This one is for you. https://kmccready.wordpress.com/2017/02/18/dog-controls-angry-human/
  20. Scottie, If he'd killed a loved one of yours ...?
  21. Motorbike. I know very well who he is. He's been one of my heroes for a long time and one of the reasons I got into sailing. I think I've read all his books. He's done lots of good for many many people, as Gerry Hughes describes in this great interview. http://www.bslzone.co.uk/watch/close-2-gerry-hughes-part-2/ But all that doesn't mean he can do no wrong. Hero worship is for kids. His drink driving is evil. http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/news/crime/round-the-world-sailor-sir-robin-knox-johnston-banned-for-drink-driving-1-7668367 His safety plan based on the belief that he, w
  22. wheels advice is good. Before I knew better and before I knew of the dangers of carbonised engines, I took my boat to a well known Auckland marine engine company who failed to even look for carbonised engine. They ripped me off too in presenting an invoice which was a huge margin above their quote. Happy to provide details. email me if you're interested.
