  1. Well if you find a boat you like and it looks good smells good sounds good and the price is right, then you should just buy it, and enjoy it. once you get past a certain age you don,t want to waste too much time, you never know how much you have left, and you would have worked on plenty of people that never quite got to fulfill their dreams.
  2. unless you can shut a few doors so you don,t need to heat the whole boat
  3. Well particularly when each motor only takes 1 litre or less, not a big coat per motor.
  4. Due for an oil change on a few smaller outboards, seems 10 30 is recommended, and there is plenty of that to Choose from, but then there is marine branded oils which were not in stock. They claim to have more corrosion resistance etc.Is it any different or worth paying extra for, I am talking about 2;4;and 10 hp motors, that get used occasionally and mostly at no more than half throttle.
  5. We applied cc ourselves a few years ago with mec checking the hull after cleaning and before we applied the cc. We spent a week getting all the old antifoul off and they still insisted on a epoxy primer first, the rudders didn’t get cleaned quite as well and cc started to peel off within a year. So preparation needs to be immaculate and they know it and normally insist on it. Waste of time and money to apply it otherwise.
  6. i am just thinking about what is easiest and lowest maintenance. Varnish may last a while if it is not always out in the weather, but once it breaks down you need to scrape or sand it off before starting again, oil you can just rub some more on with a cloth. Yes treated pine would be better if it is out in the weather, but most timber on boats is untreated.I made some curved tillers out of treated ply glued and sealed together with epoxy and then painted white. They were super strong. The original tillers were much lighter out of kahikatea ,white pine , but had rotted.. some boats have nice v
  7. If you want hardwood go to a building recycling place but easier option is pine either painted white or sealed with linseed oil. Or look on trademe
  8. Shouldn’t cost much to get some timber to make a new tiller and put a piece of alloy or stainless plate either side for the pivot bolt to go through, that way it won’t break again. Trim down a tanalised pine fencepost and it won’t rot either.
  9. Looking good is that a new mast or just painted black
  10. Sure you need to comply but a totally dark boat with a complying white light 60 or more feet above it and nothing but darkness below is not the best protection against collisions even if you are totally in the right. And even a dim solar light will improve that situation. They also work on moorings where no light is required but you may find your boat being hit by others at times By the way is durville rock still unlit that deserves a light of some sort.
  11. Masthead lights are great at a distance but up close on a dark night a deck level light is much better protection from being run into by someone looking for a spot to anchor even if it’s a garden light
  12. probably just the location now, still paying 65$ a year for it. You would need to put in new anchors and lines but most boats there hang on tyres buried in the mud, and they seem to work very well, I had 2 or 3 tyres for the bow and stern about 20 metres apart, with the boat aimed at the bridge to get the ferry wakes end on.
  13. I have a little shoal bay drying mooring available has had cats and tris up to 46ft on it
  14. Transocean a German club is very easy and cheap, works fine,no survey needed.
  15. I would have liked to put a roof on Catabatic it could have been something similar.i
  16. . Sale of the century for a fast catamaran so far., !
  17. . Yes sometimes attitudes need to change for the vendor before a boat will sell, I looked at a boat that needed major work listed at 120, I liked its potential and had just sold my boat and so offered 70, it was refused, 2 years or more later with the boat in worse condition and the vendor getting realistic I bought it for 40 odd. Owning 2 boats at once is not good if you only want one. This run of nice weather makes boats seem a good idea, even the wife wants to go sailing.
  18. We have a 80 l holding tank but at other times on previous boats we found that 2 lidded buckets of dry beach sand made a pretty good not so smelly holding tank, 1 bucket with a layer of sand to go in and then cover with sand after from the other bucket. Dump overboard where allowed and restock with sand at the next beach. Oops probably need a resource consent for removing sand from the beach!
  19. getting ready for another night trans tasman
  20. Yes the pahi is an older design but still pretty popular the 52 ft tennant cat on trademe at the moment is a little tempting though not much room for cruising.
  21. You could set up a Basecamp at motuihe and daysail from there, pretty sheltered on one side or the other there.or even just spend time on the boat in the anchorage,it's real nice island and great beachs. Just don,t get caught having to do the wind against tide channel chop there, that can get quite scary for some people.
  22. So just sail the course without entering or getting in others way. Or even better just go cruising.
  23. East side of barrier, rakitu island and Okiwi, mercury island are all great spots.
  24. Funny I put that photo on another site today and now a guy in England is wanting to contact him to see if its for sale .! There is a lot of Wharram enthusiasts around the world.
