Zachary 2
The mast and boom on my traler yacht are in good condition but was never anodised so look pretty average. To improve the look, the mast is too long to strip and anodise and it has been suggested I get it either powder coated or wet sprayed. Any advice from those in the know? Cheers, Mike
ballystick 73
I've seen a mast that was oxidised and shabby but then an acid type cleaner was applied to make it like new again, a really good result but I can't remember the type.
Dtwo 157
http://www.nyalic.co.nz/ Expensive but should bring up a good finish. Doesn't like solvents.
Addem 98
I had mine stripped and sprayed and ended up being the most valuable/expensive part of the boat.
MasterOfDisaster 0
Once painted - a hole in your pocket. That said, as long as the paint is good, the spar will last as long as the rigging.
ballystick 73
Mike McCormick rigging in Tauranga could tell you what they use on old spars to make them look new again.
tuffyluffy 76
Ullrich Aluminium sell a specialised, rubbery sanding block that brings up aluminium beautifully.
madyottie 82
When I was cycling, we would use autosol to bring Ali up to look a bit chromy, might be worth a try.
Tiller 2
just give it a good sand and wax it using a good polish. Repeat every so often. The wax will fill up the aluminum that will stop the salt getting in. easy and cheap.
harrytom 650
I believe that un anodized ali masts etc that get that salty tarnish look is the ali defence against corrosion, but i would not sand it,polish it till you no for certain
wheels 543
DO NOT POWDER COAT. It will look great for a few years, then a little bit of Salt water will get in under it and then it starts to blister then it becomes a mess and you can even have corrosion work right through the Ally. A Polyurathane paint is much better that Powdercoat. But even that will eventually fail. It could be 20yrs though. It takes a lot of prep and good etch primer and then a real good top coat to get the best long lasting coat.Anodizing is the best finish. It is very hard wearing and corrosion proof. But I have no idea if anyone in NZ has a tank long enough to take a mast. Once anodized, it will last for years and years. I imagine the cost would be as much as a real good paint, because to get the best anodized finish, you need to have the mast cleaned and sanded smooth anyway. Any nicks and scratches will remain unless sanded.
