Duty Free 2
Exposed , lagoon only good for trailer boats (never seen a boat with a mast in there when l was a regular out there )and can be a surf running --main beach good to surf, no place for a yacht unless exceptionally settled and after a few days of offshore winds (highly unlikely !!) AlastairW 15
Was there not a yacht lost in there many years ago when it tried to use the bay for shelter in a big Southerly?
Battleship 100
Best to keep going to Napier not a nice place to get caught out.

Island Time 1,246
Was there not a yacht lost in there many years ago when it tried to use the bay for shelter in a big Southerly? Yep. Dodgy as in a big southerly, better to stay at sea. Some shelter in the bight, but not much room. You drag in heavy weather, and your prospects are bad, boats are worse. OK for a visit in fair weather.
wheels 543
It was a savior for us in a Horrific Westerly, by getting in against the Cliffs near the Lighthouse. No rocks right up to the Cliff face, no rocks on the bottom to snag an anchor on. It's a sandy bottom with OK holding. Stick out from the cliff by say 25m to allow for gusts that can sometime eddy and suck you back toward the Cliff.Stay out of the wee inlet. It looks so tempting, but a real trap for any keel boat.Very shallow draft can get close in around on the inside of the Lighthouse if you really have to shelter from a Southerly, but you an also easily get trapped in there as well and as IT said, best to keep running with the Southerly and stay well out off shore.Don't go anywhere near the place in anything from Southeasterly/Easterly round to NorthEasterly. It's a very dangerous place in the wrong wind.In calm weather, it is a pretty wee place to visit, but swells can make it uncomfortable unless it has been light westerly for a few days.I really want to go back there by Car one day and have a good look around. Addem 99
It's a great place to visit. This you tube clip is interesting. https://youtu.be/d2sw2Hjku2E
B00B00 310
We went in there a few times when I was a kid going up and down the Wairarapa coast.I remember it being a pretty cool place to visit but is a natural wind funnel so be careful. Shane Im sure you have seen the weather that is coming? Make sure you get somewhere sheltered and be safe.
wheels 543
So is there some Geological feature inland that causes the Westerly to blow that hard there??The Video Addem posted is getting close to what we experienced (60 to 70kts) and that Cat is close to where we first tried to anchor and of which we simply pulled the anchor through the sandy bottom, before we hauled it in and went to the other side of the lighthouse. Battleship 100
I think pretty much the entire Wairarapa coast can howl in a westerly, I've heard stories of boats getting hit with gravel miles out to sea.
