Ptown 14
OMG, this is my new favourite thing!
Island Time 1,288
They are cool! Great public support as well, for what is a pretty basic craft. Tough to sail as well.
Ex Machina 386
Kinell ! Makes mullet boats look tame , love the bamboo spars and hiking sticks
DrWatson 382
This is what's missing in NZ. This kind of public engagement. This kind of enthusiasm. Can you imagine a regatta like this in the bay of islands? Bringing together NZ tribes (of many ilk) to actually sail some kind of traditional craft in a balls to the ball regatta? Maori may not have used sailing craft as much once they settled here, but they were certainly using fast capable craft at times for long distance voyage, and there are plenty of examples of Tongan or other pacific island outrigger sailcraft being used in NZ. To recapitulate that spirit and infuse it with a modern enthusiasm in a big event like this could do wonders for sailing in NZ. Also, these things are not slow... Fish 0
Agree Dr, But lets play a game. How many infractions of the Yachting NZ safety categories can you see in that video and on those boats? Possibly, to make it easier, are there any aspects at all that would comply with even a YNZ Cat 5? Life jackets? (I think some are, some aren't) Life lines? Sounder Flares? Anchor? Hiking inside where the life lines would be? Self righting ability? Fire extinguishers? Auxiliary motors? I guess we could say the interior is well ventilated Rudder of suitable reliable and strong construction? Its far to cavalier, dangerous and fun to be allowed to race those in NZ... Priscilla II 417
Sadly it is too grass roots to appeal to a billionaires ego. No carbon no unobtanium no need for excessive budgets for both boats and bases. The local equivalent to the Yole would be the Mullet boat and once Kevin’s mob has transmogrified their existing location into yet more stinkpot sales berths that will be a massive nail in their coffin. Sailing has for some time been firmly travelling on the road to becoming A Tale of Two Cities here in the City Of Sales.
Black Panther 1,745
I nominate that for post of the day. Not least for including the word transmogrified.
