Farrari 4
ETNZ have released a picture of what their new support craft will look like for the AC72. It's a cat with 4 x 300HP Outboards and an expected top speed in excess of 50 knts. The first of the AC72's is due to be launced June/July. It's going to be interesting watching these guys out on the harbour. http://etnzblog.com/#!2012/05/new-chase-boat-will-mother-the-ac72
rigger 47
I guess they will need to get an exemption to the 12knot rule for the chase boats?
banaari 27
It's a cat with 4 x 300HP Outboards and an expected top speed in excess of 50 knts. A beautiful example of the 3rd-power law putting fizz boats firmly on an expensive hiding to nowhere
Battleship 100
What the f*ck is the 3rd power law??
banaari 27
What the f*ck is the 3rd power law?? That in general, the power required to drive an object through a fluid is proportional to the velocity cubed, neglecting step-change effects such as planing.
Battleship 100
Ok thanks for clearing that up, I don't know why I didn't know that already
Atom Ant 0
What the f*ck is the 3rd power law?? That in general, the power required to drive an object through a fluid is proportional to the velocity cubed, neglecting step-change effects such as planing. Does that mean that it will be expensive? Grinna 2
Does that mean that it will be expensive? Come on AA ... this is the America's Cup we're talking about here! They're all about controlling costs in the interests of a fair competition that has the greatest appeal to the viewing public, while being an international sporting spectacle! ScottiE 174
But he does have a point. It's a cat so the planing 'step change' will be pretty quick. I reckon they've gone this way to give them the ability to reach speeds approaching 60kts quickly and efficiently. This not unlike the drug running boats out of central and south America, the windies, DR etc. they'll be planning to have to overtake the ac boat to head another boat off further ahead - the AC boats will likely exceed 40kts. Old lead- winging theories don't apply no more!
PaulR 3
- the AC boats will likely exceed 40kts. I think you will find they will AVERAGE 40kts, if knot more . . .
Guest
Tis getting very exciting. Gone are the days we can go out and follow then around tho
Clipper 375
I think you will find they will AVERAGE 40kts, if knot more . . . Not a chance in hell of that.
Guest
I think you will find they will AVERAGE 40kts, if knot more . . . Not a chance in hell of that. It would be interesting to see what they average in 25 knt winds with semi flat seas.
Guest
EMTNZ have just launched their chase boat ahead of the AC72 launch
Guest
The story I heard was that they have a limited amount of time allowed for on the water testing under the rule. this time starts as soon as the tow is dropped. Therefor they need a tow boat that can get the hell out of Doge bloody quick if the wing powers up. Expect tow speeds in excess of twenty knots down the harbour. wonder if that contravenes maritime law??
philstar 62
did any one see this thing screaming out of the harbour at about 5pm of the simrad 50. man it was flying!!!!
